That's a wide-open question, like saying "I just got a new truck, so what should I do to it?" A little info like saying you want to go off-roading, will prevent the wasted suggestions of lowering it and adding air bags, etc.

So will you be taking this rifle off-roading, street racing, or using more as a daily driver?

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

I want a better/smoother trigger and improved accuracy. But mainly a daily driver.

I agree with the leave it alone thinking but whatever you do don't alter the original components, in my humble opinion I would want to keep a nice old rifle the way it is or at least be able to return it to that state.

I think your first step is to shoot it a bunch and then decide what YOU need.
the Ruger 1022 has so many unnecessary accessories (flash hiders/compensators/CHEAP bipod's.. sometimes these products even scratch up the original blued finish) but there are a few that each individual finds helpful.

if you're old and your eyesight is failing they have peep sights or you could pretty easily mount a scope if it has the predrilled holes on the top of the receiver.

There's also something called the extended magazine release if your fingers are having problems releasing the mag, by pressing the factory button or you want to be quick (like a mall ninja).

If the gun Is too short for a tall body they have extension pads to get the correct length of the stock.

You can never go wrong with buying more magazines and ammo and that's what I would probably buy Now if I were you.

there are new laws that are restricting our free access to ammunition that will be here before you know it so
stocking up now while it's cheap-ish is the best thing you can do.

Hogue stock, polish the bolt/trigger faces, shoot lots.

Nearly all 10/22 stuff is bolt-on performance, so you can always return it to stock. The upgrades that can't be undone, like tuning the bolt, would be unnoticed without a tear down anyway.

On that note, for a daily driver to meet your needs I would start with the KIDD trigger kit that runs about $105. It will improve the trigger immeasurably! Ok, that's a lie since you can actually measure the improvement, but you get my point. If the accuracy with the improved trigger is not on par with your needs, you can easily replace the barrel with with whatever fits your budget. Green Mountain barrels are a good bargain and perform well, so take a look there for starters. If you want to take it up another notch, you can upgrade to a better bolt, or send it off to someone like Randy at CPC to tune it up. I've had more than a dozen tuned by Que and swear by it, but I believe he is no longer doing side work now.

All of this except bolt tuning can be undone should you want to return to stock for some reason.

BX-Trigger gave mine a 2 1/2# pull. Very smooth plus better mag release.

check you tube for trigger tune ups, plenty aftermarket support. I just up-graded my 10/22 with the magpul x 22 stock and a lightweight barrel from whistle pig. The new stock is very adjustable and with the lightweight barrel it should be easier to get the grandson going with it.

If I found a 1966 in good shape I would keep it just as it is and find a later model to modify. I have a '68 that looks like it has been in a safe for 49 years, it shoots great and will stay the way it is.

That said, your gun, do as you want to with it.

Keep it factory if it's that old. That's a curio and relic gun. Someone on rimfirecentral might pay you good money for it if you don't like it how it is. I'd get a new one to modify. I mean, it's your gun, but to me that's like saying, "I want to put a honda civic body on this old mustang because I want more cargo space." Get both.

should be able to tackle pretty much anything on a 10/22. More skill = cheaper/fabricate parts, Less skill = not as cheap/buy parts. But changing parts can by done by anyone with just a hex wrench (I think older ones used a flat head screw) and maybe a youtube video... super simple gun.
