    New 10/22 project; complete

I'm nearly finished with my Feddersen 10/22 project. I was lucky enough to respond to a post by Fred Feddersen on the RFC forum, where he offered 15 (and ultimately 50) of his newly manufactured CNC machined receivers to compliment his line of barrels.

The goal of my project was to build a 10/22 around the receiver and a Feddersen 18" contoured barrel, using all Ruger factory parts, reworked by me, or parts that I fabricated. All Ruger parts were purchased as new factory take-offs. The only other parts purchased were an oversized trigger/disconnector/hammer pin pack, to allow me to bring the trigger pull down below 2lbs. Total parts, including a leather sling, but less optics, came to $345.

I'm hoping for average 1/4" groups from the setup, but will probably be happy at sub 3/8" at 50 yards, given that I'm not using a bull barrel.

Here's a link to my project:
I'm still waiting to get my Feddersen receiver into my hands. Tomorrow is the earliest pick up date, but I won't be able to go pick it up until Friday, so I'm on the final countdown of my Feddersen/Ruger sporter project. The rifle will consist of the Feddersen receiver and 18" contoured barrel...

It's a budget build, but still comes in about $70 over the cost of my other 10/22, which is a decent shooter itself (sub 3/8" average from four 5 shot groups @50). Given the pedigree of the new rifle barrel/receiver combo, I'm hoping it'll be a real tack driver.

Raw been following your thread on RFC. Looks great, building the same style shooter with a GM 19in barrel.

We should compare notes when you're done. The GM is a good choice (19", I'm assuming heavy tapered?). I felt obligated to use a Feddersen barrel with the receiver, plus I haven't tried one yet. His heavy tapered is 17", so I went for the 18" contoured since I like the look of the longer barrel with the sporter stock.

Finished my project. Maiden voyage next Friday, weather permitting.

Total investment: $382, including shipping costs, not including optics.

              Slow progress

Slowly but surely getting used to shooting with a rest, and with these light weight skinny pencil barrels. Lot harder than with my bull barrel off of a bipod.

I've never shot my 10/22s at 25 yards, but I had to on Saturday since there was a bench rest match going on at the 50/100 rifle range. The 25 yard pistol range doesn't have real room for a rest, except for an 18" wide bench for laying guns and equipment on. I turned my rear bag backwards, and just barely had something to rest the heal of the stock's pistol grip on. I was basically testing various pressure pad positions under the barrel, but since the gun seemed to be shooting OK, decided to try a couple of targets for groups. Second target ended up doing pretty well, even with the awkward position on the bench. 5 shot groups, 3 group average was 0.192" and 4 group average was 0.244" (measured with OnTarget), shot with CCI SV.

I know 25 yards doesn't really mean much, but I'm feeling like I'm making some progress and have a lot of tweaking of both the gun and technique to go. Hopefully I won't have to shoot at 25 again except off hand, since it's pretty uncomfortable for using a rest there.

25 yards is fine. You have to hold the rifle, brace it, breath, aim it, pull the trigger, etc. and repeat. If you can't do it at 25 you can"t do it at 50 or 100 or other.

Very nice rifle. Fred was very smart and made some excellent friends with his giveaway.

Shot at 50 yards this morning. Too light to let it free recoil, so I really had to muscle the rifle and press it downwards to control it; but started seeing better results using that method. I'll need to keep working on technique and then consistency, but I'm seeing some promise.

1st row is Eley Club, 2nd CCI SV, 3rd GECO Semi-Auto, all inexpensive target grade ammo. Average of the 10 - 5round groups came to 0.455", not spectacular, but decent for now:

You probably know this but it takes a number of shots for the barrel to settle into any new lube when you change bullet makers. CCI SV is particular waxy in my opinion and take a bit longer to clean out. I don't see any evidence in your groups but I don't know the sequence you shot them.

Less than a half inch is darn good with those ammo choices. Try some Sk+ or Match. Seems it is, depending on lots, very good for it's price point. You have a winner in my humble opinion (as well as great value).

Addition - Went over to rimfire central and read about your build. Heck, you certainly do not need any advice from me. Great work on all the internals.

Thanks! Good point on the lube. I usually shoot about 15-20 rounds between ammo types for serious testing, but I'm not even there with this gun. I have shot some SK+ through it, and even some Midas+ the first day I took it out, but I think I'd be wasting anything better than the CCI and GECO at this point until I get my other variables under control (mainly me). Plus I have a lot more of the cheaper stuff, and only a case of SK+ stored for the big ammo drought coming up. All of my other good stuff can be measured in bricks or boxes, and I even feel bad about wasting the Eley Club at this point.

And all advice is always welcome. Only some of this stuff is a "science", but most of the things that work, or don't, are based on trial and error. I'm learning more from this project than I have since I first started reloading. Fun stuff

Bushnell Rim Fire with side focus, 6-18 X 40 (633184). Knee-jerk purchase because I got if cheap ($100). I should have thought about it more, but I was anxious to get something mounted and try out the new gun. I predict it will go into the parts box within 6 months, but it's OK for now.

EDIT: One thing I dislike about this scope is that the crosshairs are so thick, that they cover most of the bullet hole at 50 yards, so I need to move the scope off to side to see where the bullet hit. I'm spoiled by the fine crosshairs on my T-36.
