    Vintage 10/22 Barrel.

I have a old ruger 10/22,serial number dates it to 1968.The stock has a few minor scratches,The bluing on the front sight and muzzle end of barrel is trashed. The receiver and internals are perfect. Also the butt plate is scratched pretty bad.My question is should I send the original barrel and butt plate out for rebluing or just replace them.Rifling in the barrel is still in good shape.Shoots straight as a arrow.Has been in the family since new.Ive got a new one I'm picking up off of 10 day Tommorow,so this one will mainly be a safe queen.

I doubt that it would be cost effective to reblue.

    Replacement buttplate:

You could easily find a "used" take off barrel from someone who replaced theirs.. Or upgrade the barrel..

If your picking up another imo just put this one in the safe and wait to decide what to do with it.

      You could reblue it yourself.
There are few of different types and brands of kits available but most are pretty easy to use.

But if it's a limited / small area you could even you might even get away with just using a Birchwood Casey bluing "pen". They even make a dark black pen for alloy and other metals that can't be blued.
their not as good as bluing but they're better to look at than raw scratched metal finishes, especially if the color matches close enough.

and personally I like a few battle scars in the wood it tells a story that it didn't spend its life in a closet collecting dust.

If it was mine and it had some type of family history, To the point where I went out and bought a new one to use, I would just clean it fix the small stuff myself preserve it with some wax or oil And then put it in the safe ready to be used if I ever need a loaner gun (or more probably use that one when I loan out the newer one) when I take a friend shooting.

The older butt plates were aluminum on the 10-22, later ones are plastic. Blued 10-22 take off barrels abound if all you are concerned about is cosmetic appeal. The butt plate you will simply repaint. If the barrel is original it will be one without all the warnings stamped in it, that is why it's called a "pre-warning" barrel by 10-22 enthusiasts. It would be worth it to reblue it. You can find us over at Rim Fire Central.

If it's a family heirloom and shoots good, I would leave it alone. A decent blue job is expensive. As some have said you can do it your self, but I've messed with some of the cheaper kits and not really all that great. I've sent out stuff to both briley and turnbulls with excellent results. But you pay big $$$ for it.

I'd go to the rimfire FS forum on arf...http://http://www.ar15.com/forums/f_...y-Rimfire.html

You'll see more than a few barrels for sale.

Thanks for the reply guys, it shoots straight as a arrow. My friend and i took out my whole arsenal yesterday and did some shooting on blm land.I was nailing 12oz soda cans at 100 yards with a 3x9 40 nikon rimfire scope.Hitting 2 liter bottles of water with my .270 win was awsome but way more expensive. Im thinking ill just leave it alone.Once my new 10/22 gets back from ruger it will be reduced to safe queen again anyway.

There is no replacing those old original 10/22 barrels. No warning script just a nice clean classic Barrel. I have two of them and they shoot as good or better than many of the aftermarket barrels I have owned.

Do not refinish original old vintage guns. Unless you don't care about throwing away money. Put it away in the safe and buy a new gun, you will be money ahead.
