    Bulk plinking ammo storage

I'm guessing there are people in the same boat as me, setting ammo aside before next January when the new laws kick in, but room becomes an issue at some point. I've decided there's no point in storing bulk ammo in the individual boxes, so I'm transferring them into managable size ammo boxes. The 30 cal size seems about right as far as manageable goes and easy to stack. 50 cal boxes are good for longer term, but not very portable when full, and the big 60 mm mortar boxes need a hand truck to move when packed full.

I'm keeping my targegt, match, and defense ammo in their original boxes, in my ammo cabinet, which takes up a lot of room, but I figure I can save space, and my back, by putting bulk plinking ammo of various calibers into 30 cal boxes. I like the same size for dumping my reloads in for easy tranport for range trips.

This is what ~3k rounds (actually 2997) of 22LR looks like in a 30 cal plastic ammo box. There's still about 1/2" of room to spare, but at right around 22lbs, it feels just right, without feeling like the handle is going to let go, which would make a mess. Of course I store all of my ammo with a few desiccant packets to control the moisture.

It's pretty efficient storage compared to a 50 cal can filled with sleeves of MiniMags, where the capacity ends up being only 2/3 of the 30 cal box of bulk ammo. Note that the 30 cal box in the background is holding 1000 rounds of 9mm, taking up about the same space, but weighing 27 lbs, which may be pushing it as far as whether the handle will hold. I fill the metal 30 cal cans to the top with 45 ACP and 357 magnum rounds, but don't have to worry about the handles with the metal cans, but the plastic ones are dirt cheap, and seem perfect for bulk 22LR.

Been considering doing this since I have 2 1/2 cases of Federal Automatch. Each case has 10x325rnd boxes and I'm looking to save some space.

Try 2k rounds of 9mm in an ammo can. Traded some .308 ammo for 9mm; I thought the handle would break at any moment!

Another option is to use plastic/reusable water bottles. They'll hold a couple boxes of 22lr are easily handled, and waterproof.

        OP, is there a question

I like the 50 cal cans because they can be stacked so easy. With all the coupons and BS its hard to beat the 50 cal cans from HB.

Nope, just sharing what I think is the best size boxes that are manageable. I have about a dozen 50 cal boxes, but when they're packed, it's hard to carry one by itself without screwing up my back, so I end up needing to carry two to be balanced, which is pretty heavy. 20lbs in one hand doesn't throw off your balance, and carrying two isn't an issue. I guess when I was younger, carrying two 50s up and down the stairs would be OK, but nowadays, I don't like taking chances screwing up my back. Sucks getting old, but I still like shooting.

            just funnin' ya

carry on with whatever suits your needs..

I'm sure someone could use your method..

I actually like .30, .50, 40mm, all size cans due to different ammo carton sizes..

I also keep ALL of my ammo in original cartons to keep their identity, load, age, lot #, etc.

track it all on a huge spreadsheet for easy accounting and loadout for range days..

I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it

I also try to store ammo in ammo cans in the original boxes. But I've ran out of room and have resorted to filling ammo cans with loose pack as long as I have enough ammo to fill one can with the same type of ammo. I cut the box into pieces and tape it to the side of the can so I know what type and lot it is.

If it's .22lr and its not already bulk packed in the box, I leave it in the sleeves. It's packed that way on purpose and that's part of the reason why CCI ammunition tends to be more reliable. With bulk .22lr, the bullet rubs on the casings leaving some residue which can cause reliability issues in the picky .22 firearms. For centerfire ammunition, this isn't an issue.

I keep one ammo can of each caliber that says "Shoot First" on the side. I rotate my ammo out by age and type. I do find myself shooting quite a bit more ammo when I have it bulk packed in an ammo can because it's hard to keep track of how much you've shot. The only ammunition I've found is best to leave in the boxes is shotgun ammo. It's odd shape makes it hard to sit nice in an ammo can.

Nice. I started down the spreadsheet route, but then I'd get lazy and forget to update it, then would have to go through another inventorying exercise and finally gave up. I was, and still do, keep the regular ammo in cartons, and in 50 cal and 60 mm cans for longer term storage.

But then I decided to buy a steel cabinet for easy access, which is great since I can see everything and get to it easily. So longer term storage stays in big cans in the basement, and medium to short term in the cabinet. But now I can keep more bulk plinking ammo in the cabinet in the 30 cal boxes and not take up too much room.

The large size plastic cans from Big 5 hold 8 bricks fairly efficiently. It's about as much as I really want to carry but not really an issue since I'm not taking 4K rounds of .22 to the range. It's long term hoardi... ummm... "storage"... so I toss in a couple packs of dessicant as well.

Ditto, quart Gatorade bottles(properly cleaned and dry) work great. Dessicsnt pack in the bottom, wide mouth for easy filling and dumping... easily portable and seals nice.

For loose plinking ammo I use the round, metal cans (1#) that Christmas cookies come in.

Not to jack the thread but where did you get the Remington .22 Target in the plastic slider box? My CZ 452 loves that stuff and I have not seen it anywhere. I have to try the gatorade bottle storage.

Can't speak for Killer Bee, but for me it would be in a 50 cal box in the basement.

I use the plastic ammo box from Harbor Freight!
There a bit smaller the 50 cal. ones but stack nicely.
At $5-6 bucks a pop their well worth it.
