What difference does 4" make? RE: 16"-vs-20" barrel length

    What difference does 4" make between a 16" and a 20" 22LR barrel?

I know I might get a little more velocity, but is it useful?

Looking on the Ballistics by the Inch website, there isn't much difference between a 16" and a 20" barrel. http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/22.html

Seriously, 22LR don't give more vel after 16". Longer barrel does it make it marginally quieter.

OP looking at the provided chart it almost looks like 16" is optimal across the board for ammo. I would go 16" imo.

Almost no difference. 22LR uses fast burning powder, and many people feel that there is no real gain after 16 inches (bigger difference between 12 and 16 though). However, the longer the barrel, the quieter the rifle will be, but between the two, I'd decide more based on purpose and balance, than length (lighter, but not too light for offhand or field work, heavier for bench work, etc.).

Did a lot of searching awhile ago. That was my conclusion as well.

what is your purpose? Plinking, bench rest, or ? You won't typically find 16" barrels on bench rest guns or anyone who is a serious 22 shooter. Anchutz doesn't make 16" barrels. 18" is the shortest they come.

Basically Plinking unless you consider the hood of my truck to be a bench .

I want a gun that is fairly precise (small groups), so I can practice reading wind conditions and range to target for less money (22LR is cheaper than 223 or 308). ... The more precise the rifle the less chance it has of causing errors in my range and wind drift estimations.

Longer sight radius when shooting open or iron sights-aside from that no real gain.

I'd personally go with 20" and best ammo you can afford.

If it's a barrel for a Ruger 10/22, I would go for 16" sporter contour.

I just don't like the idea of a 20" long bull barrel hanging off an aluminum receiver by a little 3/4-inch shank.

not the length your asking about but i have a 24" CZ and a 20" kidd and shooting eley edge over the magneto speed both are right at 1050fps to 1065fps.
personally i like 18"-20" i think 16" is a little short and not because of velocity loss just looks funny because its so short.

Longer barrel, longer sight radius if using irons. Nothing to be gained ballistically by going over 16" if using a scope. I have several bolt action Target rifles with barrels over 20".
