Anschutz Model 54/ 1413 SuperMatch

I picked up a Anschutz Model 54 the other day, along with a seperate Model 1413 SuperMatch Prone Stock. Some dings, Marks from use, and being 50ish yrs old (1962?).

Do any of you guys own of these? How does she shoot? And any suggestions on whether it would be prudent to try and repair/mask some of the scratches/dings in the stock. Or will I kill the resale/collectors appeal by doing that?

Congratulations on the acquisition of two fine rifles.

I now have several model 64's and the model 54's are a cut above the model 64's in accuracy and trigger quality. As far as accuracy is concerned, you can expect a 1/4 inch grouping at 50 meters. In most cases the rifle is much more accurate than the shooter. I have used these rifles in metallic silhouette competition and they are phenomenally accurate.

Regarding the resale value of a restored or altered rifle, I have seen some very well used, and modified, model 54's command a very good price on the second hand market. ($1,500+) I can not speak to the value of the rifle if you were to refinish it. In most cases the rifles I have observed, do not have their original unaltered factory stock. I have seen match stickers, paint, modification of the grip to the shooter's likes, different sights, accessories, etc. to be the norm for these rifles. The rifles are often modified by their owners to fit their needs for competition.

I own a 1517d. It has the 64 action. Knowing that the 54 actions are even better you are going to be pleased. I have run close to 10k rounds through it and have been very please. I look to buy another Anschutz in the future.

Does it have one extractor, or two? The earliest 54's had one. Also look for a "smilie" at 6 o'clock in the throat area of the chamber. Having one there, which looks like a subtle shadow, is indicative of having a LOT of rounds through her, and needing a new barrel or at least a 180 clocking and/or set back. Mine has one and it is not as accurate as it should be at the longer distances. Shooting 200 yard prone on the English target, or 150 to 200 reduced palma it is not as accurate as a H&R M12, but still shoots mighty good at shorter distances.
870classic nailed it re: refinishing. These guns hold their value as the fine tools that they are engineered to be, and most folks seriously looking for one will not care too much about original condition, as long is it is not run over by a truck.

Thanks for warm welcome guys! I look forward to shooting her at the range! I am not sure about the extractors, I will take a look when I get home, also for the "Smilie".

The condition really isn't that bad, I tend to judge Condition harshly. The metal appears to be rust/pit free, and that is much more important than dings and Scratches in the wood I would imagine.

I'll keep you guys posted, and hopefully throw up some pictures as well.
