    Lever, Bolt or Semi?

    HI,

I'm looking to start my 7yo daughter shooting. I am looking for some guidance on a 22lr rifle, but with so many options...

I think weight is a big concern, but also looking for feedback on choosing Lever, Bolt or Semi. Is color a concern for girls? I have seen stuff in pink and purple.

    Thanks in advance,

Bolt action, open sights. Teaching the fundamentals of shooting by using the most simple action and sights. Personally, I would look for a single shot rifle rather than magazine fed for a child, but thats my personal preference. There are some kids starter .22 rifles out there, but I am not up to speed on what's available. There will be someone along soon with that info I'm sure. Another question is, has she shot anything before? Perhaps a cheap Daisy bb gun to get the safety and handling down before putting real ammunition in hand. I started all my kids on bb guns, then when I was comfortable with their safety skills turned them loose on firearms. Again, just my preference.

^^^This. My self, I got a Daisy 2022 to get my boys started. Where you located? My LGS HAD a couple youth single shot rifles, for under a C spot, before Christmas. PAX

I've read Cricketts were good. I'll probably buy one of these to start my kid on firearms.

I would say a tried and true Ruger 10/22 and start with iron sights.

Bolt action, mag fed. Cricket is nice, but I will recommend a Marlin XT-22 over it.

I started my daughter on rossi single shot break action 22lr/.410 with irons. I think anything other than a single shot bolt or break action would be overwhelming for a 7yo. I wouldn't even consider semis (10/22) until they are at least 12.

OP - I would recommend a Savage Rascal. It's a youth sized single shot bolt action with a very GOOD adjustable trigger. It's light weight and has a short length of pull. I got one in black for my son but it comes in all colors of the rainbow. The price is around $179-$199 but well worth it.

My 1st started with a Marlin 15Y youth single shot , the 2nd started with a Crickett which to be honest I disliked.
They seem to soon out grow the single shot.
A repeating bolt gun can be used as a single shot and then put in service as a repeater with no fuss ...... however both the Marlin 15Y and Crickett have a size advantage if it is needed without hacking on a stock , etc

You'll begin to feel like a Free Man
And pretty soon you'll begin acting like a Free Man

I started my boys out with a bolt action tube fed 22, a family gun it was heavy for them but I would help them hold it as they took those first shots. I would avoid a semi auto simply because any child will forget those first safety instructions on occasion and you don't need them waving a semi auto around that may have a round in the chamber. My second choice would be a Henry lever action.
