    Top-break rimfire revolvers

I've always liked the way top-break revolvers worked. Alas, they're really not feasible on for modern centerfire cartridges. What about for rimfire? Is it possible to make and market a non-tiny top-break rimfire revolver?

I'm aware of NAA's short-lived attempt to sell a top-break mini-revolver. That had some manufacturing problems and it was quickly discontinued. Supposedly they're working on a better design. What I'm after is something in a J-frame or larger.

I suppose you could seek out an H&R/NEF 999/Sportsman.

I still have an ancient Iver-Johnson 22lr top break pistol. I got it when I was 11 years old. For a 8 shot rimfire it was a great solution that they need to invent a problem for.

I have an H&R 999, and I love it. It can be hard to find someone to work on them or who knows ho to do so. I use mine as a dashboard gun when out shooting prairie dogs, as well as plinking. I like its 9-shot capacity, along with the fact of not having to remove the mag, empty the chamber, etc to make safe and put back on the dash. And it is faster and easier to reload than my Single Six. I even have a couple of speedloaders for it. It is very accurate, rivaling my Ruger MK III bull barrel.

These are what I would look for also, some are even C&R so they are Roster Exempt. You just have to do some research. Cabela's Reno has had as many as 3-4 of them at a time.

Look for a C&R in good condition on line or shop your local gunstores.

Last year a used H&R Sportsman 6in bbl in an original but soiled box went for $700 at Carol Watsons Auctions in So Cal.

4 inch bbls are even harder to find!

This may help in your shopping:

It took me many years to find a 4in and at a price I will pay , got one this year for $300. A near new 999 from about the mid 1980's era.

The 999 Is a nice gun indeed, gave mine to a friend back in early 70's, I do miss it.

I'm sure he has sold it by now.

I've got a 999 with a 6" barrel. I find the rear sight a little fiddly and had to find a replacement because it was missing when I got it from my father in law.

I collect the old H&R break actions. Interesting gun to play with.

While not a traditional revolver, Mossberg's first firearm was a top break, rimfire pistol with a revolving firing pin.

Every Mossberg Brownie I have ever encountered was broken or very worn and priced very high. I had a more modern copy and it sucked.
