    Reloading .22 rimfire.

Over on the Cal laws and regulations subforum someone posted about a question regarding the new ammunition laws which will go into effect shortly:

" Also, get reloading equipment now... current laws proposed don't restrict reloads, but that will follow eventually. "

It could be that there will one day be a limit on how much loaded ammo you can posses. And we know in the future there will be restrictions on buying ammo. It may be some wish to have the ability now to at least to reload .22 rimfire in the future, if necessary.

    ---
What I don't know (the seller's website probably has the answer) is how many times a 22 brass case can be reloaded. Probably not as many times as a centerfire brass case.

How many times can a 22 rf shell be reloaded ?

          depends .

What type of firing pin you have ? Does it leave a round mark on the rim or a sharper " striker" ( rectangular) mark ?

You want mild or wild loadings ? black powder to unique .

I have gotten , on an average , 6 per case , on mid level loadings.

If you knock out the firing pin mark you work the brass and it becomes brittle,
you trying to reload those nickel plated cases , the don't last as many times , an average of 3 .

I have some cases that loading mild , black powder loads , knocking out the firing pin mark ( round markings) , lighter bullet ( 25 gr) at about 920 fps and 47 fpe going on 10 loadings .

Then I have those wild loads , 25 gr bullet, Hodgdon Clays @ 1720 fps , 164 fpe , that last only 3 loadings before splits .

Is it for everyone , maybe not . lots of extra work if you want good ammo , some better than factory in my guns . A little time consuming , like making match grade ammo on a hand press or single stage press .

But it is priceless to know you can reload it , get better ammo , and not worry about a shortage, shipping , or having more than they want you to have .

As for cost figure this out , 1.5 grains of powder ( some times less ) per rd ( 4600 rds + per lb of powder) , primer compound at 2.00 per 1500 rds , free lead ( casting is a must ) , and all your saved once fired brass ( free)

Having options is almost never a bad idea ........ with that being said .....I could buy enough 22lr with $60.00 that would take me years to personally hand-load "I'm slow I admit"
but having choices is always better than not

My 22rf reloading equipment came from my grandfather , who made it out of his cowboy fence pliers during the depression . Funny how they used to get by with what they had and made due .

Necessity is the mother of invention .

And it only has to be as slow as you make it , no slower than a single stage press for center fire , hand gun or rifle .

Now that is interesting and I'd have to load a few with it ..... just to say I did.
If you had any pics .... I wouldn't mind seeing them.

You have to post pictures of that set up. I love to see the ingenuity of the older generations.

How do you re-form the firing pin dent ? Or do you just ignore and have a dead space on the rim, and occasional FTF ?
What is the primer compound ? How do you get it under the rim ? Put in a drop with solvent/carrier and then spin the brass ?
