What .17 WSM to get?

Ruger 70/17 + trigger job (at least the internet tells me it really needs it)

Savage B Mag Sporter (are the new ones better now?)

Main use will be target and silhouette shooting up to 200 yards in sometimes very windy conditions.


I do have a very good scope.

My buddy sent his bmag to Savage to get checked out and savage decided to send him a new rifle. It's been about 3 months now and still he has not received a new bmag.

The Ruger looks really nice and that's the only thing I know about the Ruger.

Have you thought about 17 hornet. The same buddy bought a CZ and the thing is a shooter and shoots flat out to at least 200 yards. It's also reloadable.

With my limited knowledge about bullets and trajectories. I picked up from some tables that the .17 Hornet drifts way more in the wind. Where I shoot it gets very windy after 11AM...

It looks like you're leaning towards a bolt action bench rifle. How far do you want to shoot it, and how windy, mph, does it get?

I saw these Franklin 17WSM ARs in another thread here recently. If they sold just an upper I'd be all over that.

Yeah thanks but I rather have a "classic rifle". Up to 200 yards and it gets pretty windy. Need at least 9 staples to keep the target in place

A friend of mine let me use his Ruger 77/17, 17 WSM. He did install a Jard (?) trigger. I was shooting ground squirrels at 175 yards easily. I shot from 10 yards to 175. Zapped 30-35 ground squirrels. I ordered a Volquartsen 17 WSM. Supposed to be at the dealer in January sometime. I still may get a Ruger 77/17 too.

Consider a single shot?

I have a bunch of Thompson Center rifles, pistols and recently added a 17 WSM barrel for the Encore, they're available in the Contender too. Single shot definitely isn't a "black rifle" and it's pretty classic. And very accurate.

Ruger is discontinuing their 77/22 line, although I don't know if all calibers (22 lr, 22 WMR, 17 & 22 Hornet, 17 WSM, 357 & 44) are included - I believe they are all ending. Much as I like them, the 2 piece bolt design always caused issues for me. Only fair accuracy with the 22 Hornet, lousy accuracy with the 44 Magnum, endless experimantation with each. Buying a CZ and an old Remington 788 cured both problems. Given my casual shooting approach, in addition to load, scope, rings and skill set I really don't need another variable such as a 2 piece bolt and endless articles/advise on how to "correct the design/manufacturing flaw".

Having said all that, if it's windy where you shoot and the 17 Hornet too l ight, I don't think a 17 WSM is going to fare any better.May be another reason to go with a T/C - larger caliber barrel costs anywhere from only $125.00 up, and no wait/DROS.

Thanks, meantime I have changed my mind on choosing a rimfire. For the reason that we cant reload these ourselves.
With the prop 62 is reaching the floor nearly unchallenged I expect that the cost for ammo will go way up. So I better invest first in some reloading equipment, propellant and primers... Or an powerful airgun...

The Hornet will drift less than the WSM.
