I'm a first-time shooter, looking to get into target pistol shooting. I've signed up for some first-timer safety/shooting courses (two days to go, it's like Christmas!), and I thought in the meantime "Hey, I'll start shopping for a pistol!" Silly me came from AZ and had NO IDEA of the rules-upon-rules that is CA gun law. So fast-forward through the two days that I'm like "Oh yeah, S&W Victory: here we come!!!", and the shattered dreams that followed...
I'm left-handed, and I'm looking for a .22LR pistol, both for the low-recoil (for the lady, she's coming to the courses too), and the (relatively, I gather) low price of ammunition. I don't need a competition-quality target pistol, just something reliable (i.e. doesn't need to be fed the finest ammo to work well, cost of ammo is sorta the point of wanting a .22LR), and accurate to the point of: I'm not going to frustrate myself trying to shoot straight only to find out the gun sucks. As it's my first gun, I'd rather not spend over $500 (under $400 would be fantastic), because I have no clue how/if my tastes will change.
Given the roster, does such a gun exist? Is looking for a non-roster gun via a PPT realistic, or do people with such guns tend to (understandably) hold on to them? Lefties out there: should a lack of ambidextrous controls (thinking slide release more than mag release) be a deal-breaker, or am I better off learning to work with right-handed guns from the start?
If I was right-handed, a buckmark of some sort looks like what I want. A P22 has all the ambi controls I could hope for, but seems to have so-so to outright-poor reviews. I'm guessing the bargain-priced guns (HP25A, etc.) aren't worth my time.
Oh: and I gather that online-ordering of ammo (to Oakland) isn't happening? Can't tell if that's actual law or scared online retailers.

Therefore, you will probably have no trouble adjusting to this first pistol. Imo, the best .22 left on the roster is the Buckmark. Do you qualify for intrafamilial transfer of a gun from a relative? That is a way for you to acquire an SW Victory (or something else). Intrafamilial transfer is explained elsewhere in this forum.
