It may not be what you're looking for, but I've had great luck with putting the inexpensive Cabela's brand scopes on my .22's. They are usually around $100 give or take a few bucks, and of course they have quite a few models, and you can always pay a few more bucks to get more features. I have one in my 10/22 Take Down bag with quick detach rings on it. I got a low profile picatinny rail for the rifle that allows me to still use the irons. Add the scope with quick detach rings, and it's like having two rifles in one.

Weaver makes super affordable 1" see-thru rings that fit right onto the reciever of your 1022. Put whatever 1" scope you want on top (cheap Bushnell scopes have never failed me) and you'll be able to make quick/close range shots with the irons or look right up into your scope for a zoomed in sight picture.

For under $300, you can get a Leupold 3-9x40.
That scope can go on any rifle you get in the future.
That's as economical as it gets.

you need to tell us a budget and a use.

          a 3-9X40 isnt going to work the same as a 1-4x24 or a 9x50...or a 4x32

see where we are going with this?

            wow , thanks guys.
not to be stupid but, what do the numbers mean 3-9x40 etc.
I like the idea of the Leupold being good for many platforms. I will probably make that my second purchase. but my initial purchase is budgeted to $100-150 for this 10 22. thanks again for all your suggestions

Use: just plinking at a range or in the dessert... all target no game

Always good to buy future flexibility in scope purchases. Since you're starting with a .22 and intend to go to a larger caliber, I'd stay away from BDC reticles and go with an MOA reticle. Capped or uncapped turrets is another consideration. For short to mid range, capped turrets work just fine.

The BSA sweet 22 can be found for around $80 and it a great budget scope option for 22.

The numbers like 3-9, reference the zoom power. So in this case the scope can be be changed to be anywhere between 3 to 9 times magnification.

The number on the other side of the x in 3-9x40. Is the objective lens diameter (glass of the scope facing away from you). Generally the bigger the diameter (in millimeters) allows more light into the scope. Helps in lower light situations and making out more detail if glass quality is not a variable.

For Ruger 10/22 I like Leupold VX-1 Rimfire 2-7x28mm or Nikon P-Rimfire 2-7x32 Matte BDC 150 or P-Rimfire 2-7x32 Nikoplex with Extra Turret

Both companies are experienced in optic making and stand behind their products, especially Leupold, if you decide to sell Leupold down the line, you wont lose your money.

I prefer 2-7x over 3-9x scopes for .22LR, they are smaller and I don't see huge need for 9x on a hunting rifle. However both companies offer higher magnification scopes in the same line, if that is your preference.

I would use Slickguns to find best deal, especially with Labor Day coming up.

Here is a good run down on optics and terminology.

If anyone is looking at Leupold scopes, Leupold is running promotion from August 10 to October 2,2016. $50 rebate on VX-1 or Mark AR MOD 1 rifle scopes.

Nikon p-rimfire is what I'm getting when I get my 10/22. Good quality, price isn't too much. Their 223 line is pretty nice bang for the buck.

I am really happy with the Cabela's Rimfire Scope and the Nikon P- series scopes on my rimfires.
