Why go through all of this just to shoot 22? A m+p sport 22 is $300-450 usually

I'll be you'll have a difficult time top loading a fixed 22 mag though.

Have a 22 lr AR conversion kit with three Black Dog mags, I never used it. I did try one mag in a dedicated Chiappa 22 upper that was a POS.
Sold that upper when Chiappa Customer Service also turned out to be a POS. I'll never buy another Chiappa product.
22 semi auto I use one of my 10/22s or Nylon 66, have several bolt 22's also.

Like many, I'm awaiting the regulations to figure out what route to take but this thread hits home most for me. Over the past 10 years my wants, enjoyments and priorities shifted mostly to .22 for rifles. 2 of my ARs have dedicated 22 uppers and that's pretty much what I shoot.
I'm torn: the reasonable rational side of me says; I shoot .22, leave it be.
The "I want what I want don't tell me what I can't have" side of me says; "I still want to be able to use my centerfire uppers even though I've not shot them in years and can't have 556 shipped to me anyway and where the heck are my centerfire BCGs".

Once I figure out what to do with my 80's maybe I'll get back to this but I will say a dedicated 22 upper is fun as hell!

It is nice to have one or two dedicated AR22, IMHO. I have one that is a light weight CMMG pencil barrel upper on a NFA Poly lower. The only thing I had to do was dump the weird trigger group in a NFA complete lower and replace it with a spare milspec group I had in a parts bin - hammer was too fat. The CMMG uppers are great. I might build another on a aluminum lower.

Shoots great, but I have only used CCI Mini-Mags, IIRC.

Well that's what I'm talking about - a dedicated 22lr upper...

I bought these DPMS .22 uppers from Tombstone Tactical last year for $275/ea
bought the lower build kits from PSA and designated a couple of lowers I had for the project..

just haven't had the time to put them all together, but kids aren't ready for them anyway so

I had heard good things about them so I bought 1 for each of my kids..

I got this DPMS AR-15 AP4 A3 Conversion Upper Receiver Assembly 22 Long Rifle 16" Barrel from grabagun last year. Won't comment on legalities, but I have had no issues with 1000's of rounds shot.

Build experience

I have built several dedicated 22LR upper receivers. I did a bunch of research to choose the right components because people have had many problems adapting the AR platform for 22 LR. Many of the problems stem from trying to shoot 22LR through a 5.56 barrel; the twist is all wrong.

I have had good success with CMMG barrels. They come in 16 and 20 inch lengths and all have a twist rate of 1:16, the standard for 22LR. Then I bought CMMG conversion kits for the BCG. I threw away the 22 adapter portion and replaced it with the collar that came with each of the barrels. The collar fits over the breech of the barrel and contains the feedramp. I then used either Black Dog or CMMG 10 round magazines that entirely fill up the AR mag well. The stainless steel CMMG 22 bolt is different in function than the parkerized version. The SS unit is compatible with their optional bolt-holdback adapter and also will mate with a forward assist adapter, although I have never needed to use this feature. I finish off the builds with a small diameter tubular hand guard that makes for a light and nimble forend.

After break-in of 100 rounds or so, I have never had a feed problem. This solution will eat any kind of ammo I feed it - Federal, CCI, Winchester, Golden Bullets, you name it. One of the nice things about this gun is using it to introduce a new shooter to the sport.

One advantage of the dedicated 22LR upper is that you gain AR muscle memory while you shoot. And you can use your favorite AR lower.
