Newbie Here - Looking for some tips.

    Hello guys,

I just recently purchased a Marlin Model 60, waiting to pick it up. This is my very first firearm and I wanted something cheap to learn and get my bearings. I am looking for some tips when shooting, maybe what kind of ammo to purchase and definitely what PPE's I might need or should consider.

Ive shot a few handguns before and I've learned basic gun safety and handling back in JROTC in high school but refreshers never hurt.

    Thank you for your time.

PPEs---personal protection equipment?---eye protection, hearing protection
Try a few different types of 22lr ammo and see which your Model 60 "likes", then stock up on that ammo.

At risk of tooting our own horn a little, look into Appleseed.

For PPE, you will want to wear ears even though .22LR is on the quiet end of the spectrum, since damage only adds up, never heals... Eye protection, whatever is comfortable, ANSI z87.1 rated is recommended. Foamies and basic goggles will be fine.

Ammunition-wise, you will find rimfires to be a little bit finicky about choices. Your best best among cheaper ammunition with the Marlin 60 will be HV ammo such as CCI Blazer or Mini-Mag (my standard recommendation), Winchester 555, Remington Golden Bullet, Federal Auto-Match. Your rifle will almost certainly like one of those.

Avoid subsonic ammunition (may not always cycle), Remington Thunderbolt (leads your bore very quickly), or hypervelocity rounds (CCI Stinger).

After you get a basic feel for the Marlin I recommend adding sling swivels and a proper sling (M1 GI sling recommended, and cheaper than the swivels), and upgrading the sights. If you like irons, Tech Sights or Williams are good options; putting on a modest scope is not at all silly if you want to go that route, anything from a Simmons "22Mag" to a Leupold 4x33 would be reasonable, depending on what you want to do.

The rifle will be plenty accurate for teaching and training duties. My similar Marlin 70 is still on its original barrel, approaching 60,000 rounds, and will still hold 2 MOA with Mini-mags.

        Stay safe and have fun!

I really appreciate all the information. Seems like Appleseed is a good idea. Looking into local events.

Mine works best with CCI Mini Mags. It doesn't like Remington Golden Bullet.

A Speed-D loader is a must have for tubular magazines.

I have a Model 6084 that I got as a kid. That this is probably the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. I can run anything through it and it cycles well and never had any issues until last weekend. After cleaning I was putting it back together and it just did not fit right, something was off. Well, I broken the ejector spring. I ordered the ejector spring and will get it going back to new again.

You will love that Marlin 60. Loading is no big deal and takes only a few seconds.

Of couse, as others have stated, get ears and eyes.

Take a hunting class and a CCW class. Both will be great "refreshers" in gun safety.
