10/22 mod. for firing subsonic ammo.

I've been researching some items lately, and came across this mod. to ensure that a 10/22 will cycle subsonic ammo. In my research online, I saw a thread on here that was over a year old that I could not reply to, and the consensus at that time, in that thread, was that subsonic ammo will not reliably cycle a 10/22, so I thought I would share this information, in the hopes of helping out other 10/22 owners. If this is old news, my apologies.

I've seen this described in articles, pictures and now this video. If you want to shoot subsonic ammo through your 10/22 and have it cycle reliably, it seems this is the ticket, from what everyone is saying. I have confidence in what I have found out about this procedure or I would not post it. Notice that the radius put on the back of the bolt varies depending on who you believe. Measure twice cut once, as they say, 'cause you can't put metal back. I hope this helps some folks out.

Did this to both of mine, and run the lighter of the 3 springs that come with the Kidd charging handle.

I've had zero issues with any ammo, subsonic or otherwise.

I did this to my wife's gun, she would get a stovepipe every 10th-20th round or so with Federal Automatch. Haven't tested it yet.

Automatch is supposed to be ok for Semi-Autos according to their label.
I haven't tried it yet on my 10/22

It runs just fine until about 50-60 rds in, then you get the occassional stovepipe. The ammo seems a tad dirty so that might be it.
I actually don't care but my wife gets pissy about it, she is entitled and thinks guns are supposed to work all the time.

So far, I have polished the inside of the receiver, and I actually sent the bolt away and had a gunsmith do the mod. They also square up the bolt face to correct headspace.

The only thing I did that nobody else seems to do - I have a reamer that will deburr the mouth of a .22 chamber. I used that to just barely break the edge in the chamber mouth. You can't even really see any difference, but I figure if the edge is sharp and even slightly deformed, it may drag on the case as it is extracted and cause friction.

Like I said, I have yet to torture test it.

I don't really care about subsonic ammo, but I do want 100% reliability with hi velocity.

Oh and one more thing - I drilled a hole in the back of the receiver so I could use a cleaning rod from the breech end. This way I can clean the chamber more thoroughly, because fouling can cause issues too.

I picked a .22 short kit from Volquartsen for mine and found it works very well with CCI Quiet 40 ammo also. I don't think I would use it on some faster stuff (1000fps).

I've run two boxes of that in one session without a single issue. It's GTG.

My 10/22 hates auto match. Kinda frustrating since I bought a bunch of it on sale and then found out.

Ruger designed the 10/22 to shoot almost any 22LR ammo. I have a little of 20 types of 22LR ammo and mine will cycle every one reliably except CCI Quiet, which at 710 fps is an exception, and really requires reducing the mass of the bolt.
The reason some 10/22s don't cycle everything is because of the changes to manufacturing over the years, changing from an anodized receiver to painted, and poor finishing of the bolt. Cleaning up the overspray on the top inside of the receiver with Scotch Brite will usually get you 90% of the way there for cycling most ammo, with no other changes. Polishing the bolt and hammer face will get you the rest of the way. You can also radius the bolt if you want smoother cyciing.

                        Try polishing the chamber.

Use a section of rod and a brass brush, chuck up in a drill motor and lightly brush the chamber with an in/out motion. Especially easy if you have drilled the rear access hole in the receiver. The KIDD recoil rod and 3 spring set is a great addition…for smoothness and tuning. A deal and must have at $10.

Another way of cleaning the chamber is to use a .243/6mm brass brush. You can bend the threaded end 90 degrees to use as a handle so you can scrub the chamber from the breech end. The tighter the chamber (match, Bentz), the more often you'd want to scrub it on a semi auto to keep it cycling correctly (I keep mine in my bag and scrub after 200 rounds or so).

If your rifle usually cycles fine, and then starts stove piping, it's usually due to a dirty chamber. If you haven't scrubbed it in a while, you'll need to soak it with Kroil, Hoppes, or other good solvent, and let it sit for 20 minutes or so before scrubbing it thoroughly, sometimes maybe a couple of times. Regular bore cleaning won't address the carbon ring build up, unless you're cleaning really often.

                          Edit w/pic:

SAAMI spec for the chamber diameter is just over .23, so the .243 brush works for a nice tight fit for scrubbing it.

Fed AM is not bad ammo at all. Cleaner then Blazers or Wildcats (do they even make Wildcat ammo anymore). My Ruger shoots it fine but I have a Kidd bolt and spring system. My Marlin 795 eats it up like it does most all ammo I put in it.
