Ruger 10/22 - Rimfire Scope or Red Dot?

I have a Ruger 10/22 that was gifted to me and want to add an optic. Mainly going to use it for paper punching out to 100 yards.

I'd imagine a scope would be ideal out to 100 yards but I think a red dot would be fun as well (Bushnell TRS-25)

    What do you say?

Steel, a dot can be lots of fun. Paper, you will want a decent scope.

For target shooting on paper, I would much rather have a scope.

For shooting on the move, a red dot is fun.

For your purposes, I'd rather have a scope.

        Why not both...

        It's not PTSD, it's nostalgia.

I've got a 3-9 Simmons rim fire magnum on my 10/22 and can reach out way past 100 if I want.

I have three, each wears a different scope. Never used a dot on the 10/22 so can't comment on that. We shoot paper to 100 (mostly at 50), steel silhouettes at 25 and 50, and ground squirrels as far as we ethically can depending on the rifleman/gear.
Mine = rapid reticle (pride fowler industries) 3-12 x 42, ffp.
Son's = nikon pro staff rimfire fixed 4x.
            Daughter's = centerpoint 4-16 x 40 mildot.

For paper, I like the simple reticle of the Nikon. Depending on your target size (and your eyes) more magnification may be needed. IME, 100 yds through a 4x can be hard to see holes unless you use splatter type targets.
            Good luck.

I'm super happy with this scope from Primary Arms. BDC out to 200yds.

I'm not much good with a red dot past 40 yards or so.

                  SWFA SS 3-15

Parallax of 10 yards, can take 50 cal (so you can use it on your centerfire as well). Has mill reticle, Side focus, 30mm body.

Three of the scope suggested above have a parallax set at 50 yards.. You know that we shoot rimfire at 10 yards or 25 yards many times, so if you want a scope that fuzzy at 25 yards, buy them. Most indoor ranges are only 25 yards.

1st choice - Tech sights. Really like the iron peeps, much much much better than stock Ruger sights

                    2nd choice - Nikon 2-7 rimfire scope

Either choice - Go to an Appleseed shoot

                      I use a 6x cheapo chi-com scope, it hits 100 yards great.

I have the Ruger 10/22 collector edition with the piccatinny rail, what do you think about the tech sights that go on the rail? They seem a bit pricey compared to just a scope, but I do love Iron sights

At 100 yards...a scope. Most inexpensive red dot sights that you would put on a 10/22 will have a dot that is sized wrong. It will be so big it will make accuracy at a 100 yards a real challenge. The Bushnell you mentioned has a 3 MOA dot reticle that's going to look pretty big on a paper target at 100 yd.. Add to that trying to get the intensity level of the dot correct, well you see where this is going...

Two things about scopes on a rimfire at 100 yd, the thickness of the cross hairs and adjustable objective, so you can correct for parallax error when going from short range, 25-50 yards to long range. Some of my favorite scopes are pawn shop find weaver or nikon rimfire scopes, good glass and fine cross hairs.

I have a Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 on mine. You can get one for less than $200.
