Ruger 10/22 TD or Mark III for Backpacking/Squirrel gun?

Wanting to get either a Ruger 10/22 Takedown or Ruger Mark III to put in my pack on backpack trips for shooting small game and plinking.

I'll probably own both eventually, but if it were you, which one would you get first, and why?

The 10/22. It'll be WAYYYY easier to actually hit game

That's what I was thinking, but I know some people love their Mark III's for small game.

I'm specifically eyeing this model. Really like the look of the gun and the bag vs the standard model. Not the price on that page for sure, but that model of 10/22.

Because it's more of a challenge.

It depends on if you want to hit the game or not.

Rifle is going to be good for much longer distances.

Hollow points have been stated as much more effective also.

          good luck

I dunno, I have both (well a Mk2 678). Two #s is a big weight difference if you're packing it plus ammo. Its also easier to hide if you're hiking around people who are not gun friendly. The difference in accuracy is really up to you, how close you get to game; in the prone stabilized across a pack, you may surprise yourself what you can do with a Mark III. You'll buy both, and they're both very accurate.

I'm really torn. The small size and weight of the Mark III is very appealing also.

                I'll add one thing:
You can buy a 10-22 tomorrow.

Mark III is PPT only unless you have LEO or relatives in the right places, etc.

It took me about a year to get my 6" tapered Mark III,
You can buy the Hunter for $900 - $1000, we have a couple of those up now in the Marketplace.

The correct Calguns answer is to buy both, you will like them.

And were you hinting at a straw purchase?

Well with that settled, let's move on to the next question. Will there be a big difference between the 18.5" and 16.62" barrel?

I have the 10/22 TD and love it. Hated the stock iron sights, but I replaced those with Williams and use a scope as well.

I was unaware that the 10/22 came with difference barrel lengths so I can't comment of the different lengths.

Not in the least, but you can ask friends if they are tired of any of their guns.

I have an LEO friend that I have asked for "right of first refusal" with, but he has been retired for 5 years and still wants his goodies.

Edit: Since you also underlined relatives, are you unaware that out of state parents or children can gift off roster guns?

Please be careful when hinting at accusations of illegal activities.

                              OP:

                              You could consider a Buckmark.

I like my Mark III better though.
