    Ruger 10/22 80% Build w/pics

    I decided to post my Razor 10/22 build for those considering doing this project with only a drill press. It was definitely a challenge to complete, but I feel the finished product was of acceptable quality.

    The Select Fire LLC website leaves much to be desired. The build video they have on youtube is lame (leaves out the most difficult part, boring the barrel hole!), their paper instructions were lame, and the instructions on their website were incomplete. I would also mention that none of these instructions matched up with their current production receivers and jigs!

    I would say that out of the companies that make these 80% frames, Tactical Machining probably offers the best quality, but of course their jigs have been out of stock for who knows how long. Anyway, I managed to piece the Razor receiver instructions together into a functional build.

    Supplies Used:

    Drill Press
    Drill Press Vise (Harbor Freight)
    Clamp
    Transfer Punch Set (Harbor Freight)
    Razor Receiver Toolkit & Hole Locator (Select Fire LLC)
    Angle Locator (Harbor Freight)
    WD-40 as cutting fluid

    The first thing I did was mark the center of the barrel hole. I used a 1/4 inch transfer punch with the barrel hole locator tool.

    Then I clamped it into the vise on the drill press. The most important part of boring the barrel hole is getting it perfectly squared up with your press. If you have a press that is already perfectly square and on a workbench that is perfectly square, your angles should be perfect to match that. Upon checking the workbench that my drill press was on, it was a couple degrees off, but the chuck was squared to the drill table, therefore as long as my receiver was at the same angle I measured the drill press, it was good to go. This is probably why its best to use a mill or lathe for the barrel hole if you have access to one.

    I started all holes by hand first (moving the chuck with my hand until I knew it wouldn't walk, etc) and stepped up from I believe 1/8 inch to 1/4 then 3/8 then 1/2 then 5/8 then the final bit was just slightly less than the finished size, which was then reamed as the final step (both the final drill bit and reamer supplied by select fire llc)

    I liberally used WD40 during this entire process.

    Everything else was much easier to do, the available instructions help you locate the remaining holes, so I won't go into doing that. Here's the finished product...

        Picked up a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x and got it dialed in. 50 yards standing, not exactly precision zeroing, but it functioned great! 100 rounds with no issues.

        I don't know if it's because of the work put into making it, but this has already become my favorite rifle!
