    Junker Winchester pump

I stopped off at one of my local gun shops to pick up a gun and while I was there the owner told me that he had two 22 rifles with problems and wanted to know If I wanted to buy them as is.
One looked like a Winchester 62 that had it's barrel cut shorter and the crown was flat. The front sight dovetail looked recut, but not that good of a job was done. It looked like someone used a wire wheel to remove some rust and most of the finish. Other then that the little gun functioned and had no cracks in the stocks.
He said he would let my have it for what he had tied up in the little gun, which was under $200. I told him that I would have to think about it.
Know I have more project guns then one person should have in a lifetime, but I started thinking, this one could be fun. The little gun has no collector's value other then some parts.
I could picture a 62/97 made from this little gun. I know that some of you are thinking, what the hell is a 62/97
That would be a Winchester 62 made to look like a Winchester 1897 Trench shotgun. How cool would that be?
I could do a parkerize finish on the metal, oil finish on the stocks. I could then modify an old bayonet to fit on the rifle and have a friend make me a vented barrel shroud. It would be a cool little rifle when done.

Well this is what I get when I don't put on my reading glasses when looking at guns.
    It a 1906, not a 62.
The bore was a little rusty and the action was full of crud. The bore cleaned up good and the little thing shoots great.

$125 is right. Near $200......I was gonna say, that is too much.
I like vintage .22 rifles as well but I prefer mag fed autos or bolt guns. Just preference, no real good reason.
My best friend has a couple of superbly accurate tube fed .22s.

It is hard to find deals on the Winchester 22 pumps but I have a few times and have had to pass on some because way too rough or modified. Most these guns were used hard. I had to pass up two 22 short versions recently $300 each or maybe less. Way too many problems and wear.

I did get a 62a in half decent shape for $100 out the door in 2007 sold it for over $500. I recently picked up a Win 1890 22lr for $200. I have had good luck with the Taurus clones and hit or miss luck with the Rossi clones. My 22mag Rossi M59 sucked.

Fun shooters. You did OK. My LGS has them priced quite a bit higher, but they have been in their cabinet for several years s.

I love gallery guns to but, on top of that, I am partial to well worn 1906s.

I'm amazed Taurus and Rossi made these guns still with the ability to hold trigger back and slamfire it. Tarus added a manual safety though as did very late Rossi versions.

That one was made in 1920.
They were doing parts cleanup until 1942, so your receiver is actually a Model 1890 that was made in 1919, and assembled with Model 1906 parts in 1920.

I think even $200 is a pretty good deal, there is nothing like the 62 in production anymore. Very cool.
