My hearing is still very good at 71, no ringing, able to hear soft whispers clearly, low sound on the TV. Never used ear protection as a youth, through the military, or after. Only started using EP in the last 5 years. I think it's because I produce tons of ear wax, like gobs of it. Firecrackers, M80's, cherry bombs, blasting caps, shooting .22s, M-14s, M-16s, M-60s, 50s. Near by big cannon, mortars firing 24/7, low flying aircraft, seeing, hearing the SR-71 take off from Kadena AFB in Okinawa. Thankful that I can still hear well.

I've noticed that many professional shooters (who shoot a GREAT DEAL) I have competed against always double-up with plugs and muffs. Some are forever stuck at the maturity level most commonly found in bad middle school students.
Likely because they were ostracized or picked-on themselves in response to their own behavior.
Wouldn't it be great if the real world also had an Ignore List?

When shooting Super Colibri from any of my rifles, I don't wear hearing protection.Comment

I used to do that too, but my hearing loss is already bad and getting worse. EVERY shot counts so I got some custom molded ear-plugs with a baffle-device that activates on the sound wave. I can hear (almost) normally while hunting, but the shots are protected. It's worth it to me.It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

I have lots of hearing loss and ringing due to shooting without ear pro when I was young and working in noisy environments.
.22 is the gateway caliber. Its all well and good until somebody says, "Here, try this .357 Magnum!"

Shot my 22 rifle for years with no ears. But a hand gun you will need ears.Comment

Good to use even if a .22 is not all that detrimental. Better to be on the safe side.
My Wife shoots more than I do now, I cannot for the Life of me get her to wear proper protection. She wears a little misic box and listens with earphones in each ear. 90% of her shooting is rimfire (Ruger SR22 Handgun.
She also shoots a Browning Hi Power 9mm and a her Bersa .380 occasionally.
I tell her that is is likely not adequate, but it goes in one ear and out the other so to speak. I cannot even be sure if she can hear me if I have to warn her about something with the music on.Comment

my ears ring 24/7
once you get the ring- it never goes away....
22 LR bolt gun is quieter than a semi auto... pistols are definitely not hearing safe...
you have one set of ears.... learn from the old deaf guys.... wear plugs and muffsRule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I have done it for decades and ears are still 100%. My doc says I just lucked out and am not affected. I would suggest anyone use protection. It is a very simple equation. Don't and you could lose hearing. Do and you know you are safe. Seems simple.Life is hard. Being stupid makes it harder. - John WayneComment
