    Winchester 1890 Registration

So a number of years back while still up in Oregon (probably 15 or so) i purchased a Winchester model 1890 at a yard sale. The guy said it didn't need a FFL transfer so i paid him 50 bucks and have had it in my safe ever since. I took it our recently after doing some research on registering another old rifle and realized this 1890 was built in 1910. i'm gonna stick it back in my safe for now but was curious if anybody has had this experience and how to register the rifle without risk of loosing it? thanks

Were you an Oregon resident at the time? It was probably a legal transfer. Even in California until a couple of years ago you could do face to face transfer of long guns more than 50 years old without a FFL or registration, and there's no requirement to go back and register guns owned before that time.

yes i was a oregon resident but do not have any documents supporting a sale. gave him $50 and he gave me the rifle. i have no idea who it is registered to or where it came from prior to me having it.

There wasn't any requirement to register it when you purchased it and, if you moved to CA prior to 2014, there was no legal requirement to register it then. In fact, until 2014, it would have been perfectly legal for you to buy it at a garage sale in CA without going through a FFL. The only crime you have committed was theft. Even in terrible shape, it is worth far more than $50 so, you're a thief.
