Pure bench shooting, youve got nothing to lose with the Varmint except mehbe the 50 bucks for the upgrade. If you wanna take it out hunting, or hike to a shooting spot, American.

I lifted the Varmint and the weight of it turned me off. If I were to have a 7 pound rifle, it would a 308

I have the 455 Varmint in .22 and decided to try the .17. For me it was a waste of money. With the .22 I can consistently get 1/4 - 3/8 groups with a Lilja barrel, but with the .17 the groups open up to 3/4 -1 inch. All is shot at 50 yds. The bad thing about the .17 is the lack of target ammo. These are just my experiences, others may be better.
As far as the weight, it doesn't matter because I shoot it from a bench only. I am using a BR stock and the total weight is 11.5 pounds.

I have the CZ 455 Varmint in 17HMR. I don't have any experience in the 22LR version. The 17 HMR is a tack driver and I took it on a squirrel outing. I probably zapped 125 or so with no problem at all from 10 to 125 yards. I can't remember the group size when I sighted it in, but for field use its great!

I have a 455 military trainer in .17. Sub MOA at 100yds all day. I have taken ground squirrels at up to 160 yards, rabbits at just over 200.

I guess I could punch out a slightly smaller group at 100 yards with subsonic match .22. But not by much, and it's far more effective than a .22 on target.
