Marlin 60 "Big 5" special rebuild

Bought a "Special Edition" Marlin 60 about 28 years ago @ Big 5 Sporting Goods. The only thing "Special Edition" about it was the gold trigger. That rifle and I have been though a lot together, and tens of thousands of rounds.

I cleaned it rarely and it just kept on shooting. It has sat in my safe for the better part of the last 10 years, and I recently took it out and cleaned her up for my son to shoot. Well, it must have been the years of gun powder residue and dirt holding all together because she just didn't want to run. She was tired. So on to the interwebs I went to give her a tummy tuck and some new life.

I ordered a new aluminum trigger guard and new adjustable wide blade trigger from DIP to replace the gritty, worn out stock trigger and cracked plastic trigger guard. Of course I went with the gold anodized trigger to keep the original look of the gun. Add to that a new trigger spring kit from MCARBO and now she has a sweet, adjustable trigger set at around 3 1/2 lbs. There's just a bit of creep to it and absolutely no over-travel. It breaks clean and crisp. I never knew a Marlin could feel so good!

Took her out for a little field testing and that's when I found out that her feed throat and lifter spring were pretty much shot (pardon the pun!). Onto Brownell's and I ordered the feed throat upgrade kit, which includes a new feed throat, new cartridge lifter, and a new lifter spring. While I was at it I pulled the old Bushnell Banner 22 scope off of her and installed some William's Fire Sights. I want my boy to learn irons before scopes. The Fire Sights are SWEET!

She's beat to hell and she ain't pretty, but she's a shooter! I'll post up some pic's and maybe a video of her in action. She's my "sleeper" rifle. No one will suspect her to be able to shoot Washington's eye out of a Quarter at 25 yards, but she did it before and she'll do it again!

Congrats! Sounds like some good upgrades!

Boyds has some really great stocks for the Marlin 60. (might have issues with them atm if you choose a thumbhole stock as they are kinda over zealous in their worry about what is illegal in CA)
Might want to check them out if your stock is beat. Also Numrich from time to time has NOS wood stocks.

          For example:

BTW did you check your buffer ? If its that old and has that many round through it, it probably needs a new one. And probably a new recoil spring would be a good idea too

I was considering a new stock, but I kind of like the "beater" quality of the gun now. Let's just call it a "patina", lol. The barrel and receiver need some touch up on the blueing, and the dove tail rail just above and behind the ejection port has been cracked off due to a little overzealous tightening of a scope mount. A new beautiful stock on it would be like putting a dress on a pig 🐖!

The buffer is in surprisingly good shape, although I should probably get a new one to be safe. The recoil spring is similarly in good shape, but again it wouldn't hurt to pick up a back up spring. I was surprised at how weak the lifter spring had become over the years. She just wouldn't cycle a new round about every other round.

I see, yea I was wondering the metals condition too. But just thought I would throw the stock idea out there.

If you ever go back to a scope you might be able to cover the broken area of the rail with the UTG 1 piece scope rings I talk about in the Marlin 795 megathread pt2. But yea those Williams firesites are sweet, my Wifes 795 build and 22/45 both rock them.

Not surprised about the lifter spring, as Marlin likes to do; it does double duty as the ejector too. IMO 99% of the problems with M60's can be narrowed down the that spring not doing one of those jobs.

IMO everyone that owns a M60-795 family rifle should have a buffer and recoil spring on hand. They are cheap enough to tack onto another order and save for the day you need them. Because when they do break your rifle is out of business.

Awh she doesn't look beat at all, give the ol' girl a break! lol Shes just been there done that.

A friend once showed me his dads 60... it seriously had maybe 10% of its blueing left... But wasn't patchy or anything, it was mostly an even finish just super dull gray instead of blue.. no idea what he did or put on that rifle lol.

I love my old Marlin 60. I have had that rifle since the mid 80's and have shot the he11 out of it. I pull it out and take it to the range every so often. I challenged my son to a shoot off: Him with the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 running a red dot and me with the Marlin 60 open sight. We were seeing who could shoot a set number of targets down at 25 yards the quickest. I won. The old girl is still spot on and the old man didn't forget how to use it either.

Put some William's Fire Sights on her. You won't regret it. Also, the DIP trigger and guard with the MCARBO spring really brought her back to life.

I agree. She looks good for her age. Mine is in worse cosmetic condition, and it does not even has LSHO feature.

I have a Model 75C from 1983. It has a shorter barrel but uses the 60 action. Great little rifle. Shoots anything I put in it. The stock was dinged up pretty bad and the trigger guard was broken when it was given to me. I put a black synthetic stock on it and (after much searching) replaced the trigger guard. I have less than $50 invested in parts, and now it is a fun gun to shoot.
