Savage 64fxp

Hello awesome people of CalGuns,

Bought a Savage 64fxp as my first rifle, I'm on a budget so a .22 seemed like some good fun for the money. Anyways, wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the rifle? Also in having trouble getting the scope that came with it on, it's a tasco rimfire scope I believe, the scope rings seem to be too small, should I brute force it or...?

I don't know anything on the rifle but the savage rifles that I have are very nice shooters. Do you have pictures of the scope and rings? Some rimfire rings are smaller than the standard 1" scope tubes. Where are you located?

If I remember right I believe that the 64FXP is the package deal you can get at Big 5 or whatever sporting goods store carry's them. I got mine from Big 5 about 6 or so years ago. I was completely surprised how nice the rifle was for how cheaply I got it.

If thats the packaged one with that tiny Tasco scope you'd be better off throwing it in the trash and going with iron sights until you get a better scope, thats what I did at least. I had the scope on for one range day and thought it was crap.

The trigger on mine was awful......and I mean really awful.
Otherwise an OK rifle.

*UPDATE* With the help of some elbow grease and a monkey wrench I was able to get the scope rings to fit.. will see how the scope works for me tomorrow

Even though nobody asked. Here is my 64 after I hit it with a can of Krylon and put a different scope on it.

I like how it keeps the Synthetic look with the paint on it. How much did that scope cost you?

Besides having a pretty bad trigger, its a great first .22. Alot nicer than a factory 10/22 IMO. There is a company called Diversified innovative products that sells a extended mag release, trigger, bottom metal for the boyds aftermarket stocks and a few other items. MCARBO also makes a trigger spring kit that helps drastically with the trigger pull.

Thanks, I honestly wish I could tell you how much the scope ran, but honestly it's been over 5 years since I got it and I can't even remember what store I got it from!

I do know Wal-Mart, Dicks, and a couple other places usually have a few lower end scopes that run in the $15-40 range and are worlds better than the tiny scope that comes with the Savage, at least in my opinion.

As to what others are saying about the trigger, I honestly think its not that bad, it is by no means a good trigger, but then again I was used to shooting my friend's Mosin which had a horrible trigger on it. So my opinion is a bit skewed hah.

Yeah I seem one at Big 5 for $25 but was hesitant to pick it up cuz I'm new to rifles and wasn't sure if I'd just be throwing away $25..

I haven't put a round through it yet but trigger seems fine when I dry fire it(if that's the proper term)

Don't dry fire a 22 w/ out a snap cap or spent shell. Bad for the firing pin (In case you didn't know). Try out the scope it came with first. Might work for you for a while. I had a tiny cheap scope on my Marlin for like 2 years then eventually upgraded.

Small drywall anchors make good 22LR snap caps. The yellow #4-6 x 7/8" is generally the right size. They may even feed from the magazine in some guns. Try to rotate them so they don't get struck in the same place over and over.
