    ANYBODY HAVE/BUILT A .22 GALTING GUN?

    Hi All,

I luvs me some .22s, and always wanted to build a .22 rotary hand cranker. I've seen the plans but have only run across one at the fishing/gun shop/bar in Sonora. But you couldn't handle it or look at it up close. Did think the shop owner said it could be had for a couple grand 10 years ago.

Any of you guys built one or have drawings for one? PAX

I've seen that gun, it is right above the beer taps on a little carriage.

Still working on mine. There are two different plans out there. D&E Modeling is more scaled down, lots of castings and set up for 22 shorts. Still it has plans for a Broadway magazine and a period correct tripod. Both worth the cost. The other is RG&G, it is an easier build, scaled for 22LR. I bought both plans but I'm building from the RG&G.

Either way, they are a lot of work! I have been working on mine for several years and have several years to go at the rate I am working on it. Still, I am making progress and will finish it before I retire.

My friends dad built one. I handled it but didn't shoot it. The wheels were off at the time. There's a photo of it at a local bar. I'll get a pic.

                  FYI.

                  Under CA laws...
A hand crank trigger system on a semi-auto firearm would be considered a "multiburst trigger activator". [PC 16930]
Which makes it illegal to import, make, transfer, or possess in CA. [PC 32900]

Therefore, in order to be CA legal, the hand crank trigger system needs to be made for a non-semi-auto firearm.
A traditional Gatling gun is considered a multi-barrel single-shot firearm.

                  Penal Code 16930
As used in this part, a "multiburst trigger activator" means either of the following:
                  (a) A device designed or redesigned to be attached to a semiautomatic firearm, which allows the firearm to discharge two or more shots in a burst by activating the device.
                  (b) A manual or power-driven trigger activating device constructed and designed so that when attached to a semiautomatic firearm it increases the rate of fire of that firearm.

                  Penal Code 32900
Except as provided in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, or possesses any multiburst trigger activator is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170.

Does PC 16930 apply to a built from scratch firearm that did not have a pre-existing semi-automatic trigger to "activate" ?

There is a fine example at the Craftsmanship Museum in Carlsbad, CA. I talked with the machinist/builder. I'm a machinist as well and we discussed the build as I was thinking about making one. She is a machinist at a mini mill/lathe company and knows her stuff and has access to excellent equipment. She said it was technically very difficult even with one of the kits (which is basically just pieces of brass billet that you have to machine). It's far beyond the capability of anyone who isn't a skilled machinist with access to a full shop. It took well over a year of hard work and she had many hundreds of hours in the build. I gave up on the idea as I just don't have that kind of time to devote to what really just becomes functional art. Don't try it without the skill and commitment to see it through.

Like I said, a lot of work! But it is doable.

Probably why BWE Firearms sells their Model 2003 .22LR Gatling Gun for $17,500.
(it's CA legal with a 10 round magazine)
