Disappointed in new 10/22 barrel, or not?

Just bought a 16" fluted Green Mountain barrel from rimfire sports & custom and am not sure about its condition. It looks pretty nasty, I wanna hit it with some hoppes solvent but wanted to get your thoughts on it first. Is it rusty or just dirty? Ive never purchased a new barrel so Maybe I'm just being a moron, but it doesn't look like what I'd imagine a new fresh barrel to look like. Let me know!

That looks pretty normal. you should try brushing it down with a nylon brush & oil of your choice. If it still looks like that after you wipe it down, then I'd complain about it.

Good to hear. I didn't want to clean it up before getting some info

Try to clean it off... If it doesn't clean up to your satisfaction, call the store you bought it from. Not a direct comparison but I've bought 2 barrels from Kidd and both were flawless, one was black and one polished.

Green mountain barrels are packaged and shipped with a liberal coating of thick oil. Stuff gets stuck to it. I'd wipe it down real good with some hoppes solvent, then apply a thin coat or oil.

Mine didn't look anything like that. It came wrapped in a thin paper, boxed. It was shiny and didn't need any cleaning. I got mine from Gun Kings. I can post a pic if you'd like

I went ahead and hit it with some solvent and a light oiling and it looks good now. Just as clean as the stock ruger barrel. What a relief, thanks guys

I have the same 16" fluted GM. Mine showed up wearing heavy vinyl mesh wrap & was fairly dirty, but shiny. Clean it up, use no more than nylon on it & if it's not to your satisfaction, send it back. A little late, glad you like it!
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!
