I've only been a handgun owner up until now and looking at a variety of AR-like options that I can shoot at my local indoor range (they only allow pistol-caliber rifles). I stumbled upon the M&P15, but I'm unsure if it is required to have a bullet button since it is shooting .22?

Does an M&P15-22 required a bullet button?

Per the flow chart, a fixed > 10 rd magazine only makes a rifle an assault weapon if it is semi-auto and centerfire first. So if you otherwise possess the > 10 rd magazine legally, "bullet-buttoning" it into a 15-22 doesn't trigger anything.
It also isn't a run around for the magazine law. You can't (for example) build the magazine body of a 25 round magazine into your 15-22 with a bullet button and then assemble the guts. The rimfire magazine exception on capacity only applies to tubular magazines.Comment
