colt ar looking 22lr

I was thinking about getting the colt ar looking 22lr, like the one they sell at big 5. my question is can you change the upper receiver with an actual upper?
what I mean is can I put an actual upper with a built on carry handle and then put the 22lr hardware in it and good to go? I like the a2 look with the carry handle, that's how I built my ar.

I believe the one you are referring to is a Colt licensed product and not made by Colt and it is a dedicated 22lr. Cannot drop a different upper on it.

The Colt AR 22 only looks like an AR...i don't think you can swap anything. The barrel you see on the outside is a sleeve, not the real barrel.

As was said, it's a fake AR, the controls are fake. The Smith is closest to how an AR works, all the controls work and they are in the correct place. I really enjoy mine.

Standard AR receivers are not compatible with the Colt/Umarex M16/M4 .22 series, H&K/Umarex HK416.22 series, and S&W M&P-15/22 series.

Build your own .22 at upper and use an existing lower. Or just build a complete dedicated .22-AR.

I have 2 of the Colt Umarex .22 carbines. If you really want an AR in .22 rim fire, buy a dedicated .22 upper. Don't buy the Umarex. It's not really an AR, just looks like one.

I looked at the SW for my kids when we first wanted a AR in the .22 rimfire platform. But quickly changed my mind after seeing the SW and doing research on going dedicated. Could not get past their proprietary design and the Plastic. They are good little plinkers though from all accounts I have heard. But being their stand alone design, and plastic, turned me off.

A dedicated "real" AR22 is just so much nicer. Both our dedicated AR22s run 100% reliable. Both have a mix of parts from Taccom and CMMG Yes more money for the real thing. But well worth it in my opinion.

By "real" I am referring to the fact that with our dedicated uppers. We can swap in a 5.56 barrel and Bolt and have a AR15. Everything else is a direct swap including the Lower. Just simply not the case with the SW.. Barrel and bolt are the absolute only difference between a dedicated .22 rimfire and a actual AR15. None of this swap is even remotely possible with a SW 15-22. It is merely a PROPRIETARY Copy of a AR15.. That is why I say real in quotation marks. A dedicated upper is simply still a 100% "real" AR15, that happens to be setup to shoot a different caliber rather than 5.56 rounds.

I am still somewhat dumbfounded why SW chose the route they did. They make AR15s too. So they could have easily made their .22s with real upper and lower Aluminum receivers, for very little or no additional expense. As opposed to the Plastic proprietary design they chose. But I also do not understand the guys that buy Plastic AR lowers from Company's like Plum Crazy, when they can buy a real aluminum one for 59.00. Some actually pay more for the Plastic ones


It appears you already have a lower. So build a dedicated upper in .22 rimfire to match your existing one. You can make it look 100% the same as you existing 5.56 upper. That is why alot of people like the dedicated uppers. They can truly make a perfect copy of their 5.56 for practice. You could just go with a CMMG drop in conversion in your existing upper. Only takes seconds to swap back and forth.. But they are not too accurate. But they do function well. Some say they clog the gas port. But I doubt that myself.

One and only thing that the SW has over the dedicated route, is they have Last Shot Hold Open like the real thing. With a dedicated upper you have to buy a Better Mag Adapter and SW mags to attain this feature, if it is important for you to have the same manual of arms as your 5.56 one. The SW mags are very good mags, they did get that part right.. SW mags are what we use in our dedicated uppers. Also use the 50 round BlackDog drums. No last shot hold open with those though.

Avoid the temptation of buying something like the crap Chiappa dedicated uppers at all costs. Price may sound tempting, but you would be throwing money away. Go with quality from the start, and you will be much happier.

I have one of the Colt M4 clones and it is a fine accurate shooter. My wife liked it so much that she stole it from me.

All that said, the first time you disassemble it to clean, you will be disappointed at the chintzy barrel insert inside what looks like the real barrel. We like ours fine, but if I did it all over again, I'd build a real AR with a .22lr upper.

I have the Colt M16 22. It's made by Walther for Colt. I liked it because the lower is metal not polymer. It shoots everything. Pretty accurate. I like it.
