    Savage Mark II

Just brought home a new bolt action 22LR, Savage Mark 2. Anyone has any experience and wishes to share. Please do.

    Fluted barrel

    Nikon scope

Will take her out to the range when it's dry up a bit. [emoji2]

    Great little gun

Super accurate. I could place 20 rounds into a hole the size of a quarter at 50 yards. Tried 100 yards but there was too much of an arc for me - couldn't get accurate groupings.

I ended up selling to purchase a 10/22. Nothing wrong with the Savage, just wanted a semi.

Use good subsonic ammo with it. I use Wolf Match and it groups great. The magazines suck though and usually the last round doesn't feed right for me.

Is that a fluted barrel, kind of an optical illusion in that second pic for me? Aftermarket stock?

Like others say they shoot bulleyes with good subsonic ammo. I like their accu-triggers and cost is a whole lot less than an Anschutz. Good for taking new shooters to the range - very accurate but low noise, low recoil and no jams.

Liked my first one so much I got a second one. One for iron sights and other for a scope. Hoping the Mako stock will have some collector value down the road, it was only offered for a couple of years.

It's a flutted barrel exactly like this one here at Riflegear, although I bought it at a different gunshop

No...it's OEM stock. I just brought it home this afternoon braving the rain.

I was gonna pick up a Sako, but it costs almost twice the Savage. This is my first bolt action. If I like it a lot, I may pick up a Sako later.

            Nice setup you got there.

Were you using the 36 or 40 grain bullets?

Was it because of the ammo or the mag?

Where would you guys recommend getting extra mags? Mine came only with one.

Pretty sure it's the mags. Happens with both of mine with different ammo. I think the spring is not strong enough for the last round to feed reliably.

In many cases, it's not the mag, but the mag catch/release bar. Try this to see:

Start with a full mag (5 or 10). After firing or safely cycling out each round, put your support-hand thumb on the back lower corner of the mag and push forward toward the muzzle to load the next round.

Try to close the bolt on each round. If it feeds ok, chances are that metal catch bar is not pushing hard enough on the back of the mag.

It is a piece of strap metal bolted to the bottom of the receiver. To get a better bend in it, I took it off, bent it just a little to add more push, and it seemed to solve my feed problem with two of these MK II's.

Here is a thread on RFC with various fixes (see posts 14 and 15 for the mag catch bend solution):

Both of my 10 round mags feed the last couple/three rounds nose low so that they hit the breach face and won't chamber. Both of my 5 round mags work fine. Finally I got tired of this and tried to fix it. Here's what's up... First, I tried checking the feed lips for gap front and rear with my...

                  Nose pickers gonna pick

                      I was using Aguilla 40 grain "Super Extra." Here's a link - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/250...ead-round-nose

I think the problem I had with 100 yard accuracy was the ammo is not subsonic.

^^^^ Yes, that was the issue. Depending on the catridge load, .22 goes trans-sonic somewhere between 60 and 80 yds. When it does, the aerodynamics at the back of the projectile creates turbulence that upsets the trajectory and causes it to wander "off course".

                          Fun and accurate.
I always shoot subsonic as other mentioned they move less

These are what I use in my Savage Mk2 fvsr. (with original plastic stock)

I get (12"X12"steel) hits @200yds with regularity so long as the wind co-operates.
Very good rifle ammo combo for me.

^^^^ Well that's interesting. From the two midway links Aguila Super Extra apparently comes on both high vel AND sub-sonic loads.

Never noticed that. Buyer be aware !
