    A little fun with a 10/22

Just thought I would share and maybe illicit some opinions. Back in late 2012 early 2013 I worked on an 80% 10/22. Milled it out and have had the parts around for what feels forever. Anyhow started the bedding process and took it to the range to have some fun. The bolt is kidd with two stage kidd trigger and 18" ss kidd bull barrel on a boyd stock. My kids milled there own and are polished on different color stocks with red dots so they can work on shooting mechanics though they have carbon fiber barrels which are wickedly light.

Sighted in a redfield revolution 6-18x44 AO at 20, 50 then 100 yards. The redfield is okay but less than 50 yards the parallax is a PITA. It is not as clear as a leupold especially at the edges but seems reproducible between magnification. I found no parallax just before the markings on the scope so either the scope is off a little or the range is.

I was a little disappointed at 100 yards with the groupings, so I may play with barrel pressure and see if I can clean it up some. I was shooting CCI std velocity target 40 gr. So I don't know if I am looking at a limit of the ammo. There was one failure to fire and every 20 rds or so seemed to be a flyer that was seemed to be unassociated with my own shooting abilities or the wind.

At 20 yards again the parallax is a PITA making it hard to shoot but at one point a bug did run across the target and I could not help but take a shot and... no more bug. Thats really cool from a home made firearm.

Anyhow I attached the best 5 round 100 yard group, 5 round 50 yard group (not 5 yards like its named), a picture of the rifle, and a bullet drop table I made from the data I collected today so you can just dial yards and be really close to on target.

With the first set of bedding I dont have any side or forward to back play, but I do have up and down play; I will probably bed the barrel for some upward pressure and see how that pans out.

Thats sweet. What receiver did you start off with?

      80% 10/22
Where do you find an 80% 10/22?
I searched all over for an 80% 10/22 and came up with Nothing.

Very nice Rifle by the way

I Googled "80 percent 10/22" and got five direct (plus one near-direct) links on the first two pages.

The 80% use were the razor 80% receivers, I agree I F**** up the first one using a drill press so I went over and used a mill and it was way easier. It can be done on a drill press but you would really want one you can control the speed on by going really slowly. also the drill press guides are only useful to get you close, if your looking for a functional firearm then that is enough.... if you want a tight fit that has a better chance for accuracy then a mill will be much more likely to get you there. But that's just my opinion. Supper fun to build it yourself!

              so its about $110 for a 80%
$63 for the complete trigger assembly
              $50 OEM 18" barrel
              $20 v block/screws
              $60 bolt and charging handle

Holy crap. This is about $300 just to complete an 80% project.

I didnt factor the jig or shipping/taxes

That would nice with some Tech Sights on it. Not a fan of scopes when shooting 100 yards or less.

                  Thanks,
When I searched around all I came up with was stuff from 2010 and 2013 nothing recent.
                  only $111.95 for an 80%
                  ^^^^^
That's probably where I went amiss and blocked it out.
I can pick up a new take off 100% for $60 and $20 FFL
$80 and I don't have to machine anything.

i have a mini mill to do these but its just a turn off that the 80% itself is overpriced for my liking.

I was looking at getting one of the mini mills from my little machine shop for small projects and hopefully some AR and 10/22 80% receivers. I was wondering what kind of mill you have and if you have any idea if the small mills have enough vertical clearance to drill the barrel hole for the 10/22?
                      Thanks for any help

i have the LMS mini mill with air spring and solid column.

it might have clearance if youre not using a vice and that long drill bit they use

Thanks, that was my worry. From the specs it looks like it would have enough space if not for the long bit. Guess I need to look into it more.

Sounds like a fun project- I'd love to build a 10/22 some day

I doubt it will have the clearance; one of the hardest parts IMO is the barrel hole (drilling followed by reaming both use long bits). My buddy has a full size mill and I used every inch. if you modified the bits I guess you might be able to get the room needed. You can easily drill the spring guide detente by hand.
