    10/22 Ruger bolt is hitting/binding

I have disassemble and re assembled like 30 times now. The bolt is getting hung up on left top side of the magazine. The bolt cycles smooth as glass with no mag or trigger group installed. As soon as a magazine is inserted it gets hung up on the edge of the mag. Ive tried a few different magazines and they all do the same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know your answer, but I have a suggestion. If you haven't already, you might check on rimfirecentral.com They have a whole section dedicated to the Ruger 10/22.

    Good luck.

Go for lucky 31 with somebody who knows what they are doing.
      It's not PTSD, it's nostalgia.

Is this a new problem or something that's happened since you acquired the rifle? If its something new, are there any new parts or mods you've performed on the rifle (part modifications, polishing, extended mag release, etc.)? Are you using factory mags?

If the bolt is hitting the mag, then for some reason the bolt is riding too low.
          Two things to check:
When reinstalling the bolt onto the recoil spring rod and handle, are you getting the bolt all the way into the receiver / aligned with the handle so the top of the bolt touches the inside of the receiver?
If the recoil handle / rod assy is not seated properly the bolt will be too low.

Next, the only other thing that I can think of that will push the bolt down is scope mount screws that are too long sticking through the top of the receiver.
Kind of sounds like this, with the bolt too low the trigger group may also be hard to push up far enough to install.
Did you change or add a scope mount?

I noticed it after i cerakoted the receiver and barrel. I masked everything off really good and i doubt 250F did anything to deform either. I had an aftermarket mag release and bolt release in when i noticed the problem. I put all parts back to OEM to make sure it wasn't either of those parts. Its almost like the mag is riding hight in the receiver or the bolt is low.

The bolt and handle seem to only go in one way and the bolt it at the top of the receiver. No long screws etc. Spring rod looks straight. Is it normal to get some bind resistance pulling the charging handle back at the half way point with no mag in? Seems like once the triggers reset any secondary pull shouldn't get any resistance from the hammer.

Have you tried swapping the bolt from one of your other 10/22s?

Just a guess, but check the detent in the receiver where the front of the magazine seats. Perhaps there is a build up of cerakote there, which could cause the magazine to not align properly. If you find a build up, you may be able to scrape it to the bare metal and see if you have the same issue.

Wish it was something that simple. I masked the inside of the receiver off so its only coated on the exterior. Been working on firearms for years and the simplest smallest one is giving me a headache haha

I was thinking, if you take the action out of the stock and cycle the bolt what happens?

Possibly the coating changed the way the receiver sits in the stock and binds the mag against the bolt.

Yep, you don't need the stock to retain the magazine so you might be able to see more of what is going on.

You sure the recoil rod isn't bent?

Owner manual recommends checking the screws used to mount any rail or scope rings.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling the bolt start to finish?
