worth it to upgrade a 10/22 for precision?

is it worth it to simply upgrade an existing 10/22 or buy a "target" 10/22 from the get-go?

I'm into precision shooting and would be nice to not throw 0.60-0.80 cents a round downrange.

    Or...maybe build a precision .223 rifle?

It's easier to build a 10/22 with high quality parts since you can do all the work at home.

If you want a production-line semiauto in 22lr, it's hard to beat a CZ 512 for precision. Mine does <1moa at 100yds with midrange SK+ if there's no wind. At 50 it cloverleafs 5 round groups. That's out of the box, with just a polished trigger, which is not great stock. It's a cheapish low-effort solution.

If you are considering bolt guns, CZ 452 if you can find one, plus $20 in trigger adjustment shims and spring.

        CZ 455 is fantastic.

You can build a 10/22 to be extremely accurate. I have one that will shoot quarter inch groups at 50 yards with Wolf Match Target, if I do my part.

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

Doesn't good quality .22 ammo kind of undo the equation?

I enjoy my 10/22 as much as the next guy but it does get old having a slight breeze effect the results.

Also really hard to see after 50 yards.

When I started reloading .308 and .223, I lost some interest in .22lr

Speed Accuracy is just a question of money -- how fast do you want to go?

Realistically, top-shelf .22 LR ammo is about 0.15 to 0.35 per shot, depending on how carefully you shop and how finicky your rifle is.

You can build a pretty darn accurate 10/22 if you want to but it'll cost. As to buying a prefigured rifle or assembling my own, I'd assemble myself, but I'd seek advice from someone who'd been there. Otherwise we tend to wind up with a box of junk afterwards.

Personally I went with CZ 452, heavy barrel. It's no match for a good Anschutz, and properly build 10/22s will hang with it or beat it, but it's enough for what I want to do. I'm trying to improve myself in field conditions, not win matches, and it does that exceptionally well.

It sounds like you don't have any specific contest in mind either, but just a general interest in higher performance -- so why not?

^^ As for the wind blowing your shots, that's a feature, not a bug. How else are you supposed to learn how to do wind calls?

yea...the more I think about it, the more it seems like I rather just make another nice precision, non-22LR rifle.

I can shoot my 6 dasher for around 30-35 cents each round. Would have to replace barrels more often, but I treat barrels like tires.

I am a f-class shooter and regularly compete in f-class matches so wind reading is something I must contend with all the time shooting out to 1K.

Smallbore would be fun sometimes, but why shoot precision smallbore when you can shoot precision centerfire for basically the same cost almost.

                  Gotcha.

Well. In that case, there is something satisfying about stretching a .22 LR to 200 meters and beyond. And they're quiet, some people like that. I love rimfire as a trainer.

But I'd agree, by the time you bring it up to the standards you're used to, even scaled down, you're not likely to save much money. Which makes alternatives -- .223, .243, 6.5x55, pick your favorite -- quite compelling.

This is my wifes target she shot while standing at 25m
                    Upgrades:
                    Used Magnum research barrel
                    Boyds stock
                    BSA Scope
Yup still has the stock trigger and hammer etc.
Was the 300$ worth of upgrades worth it? I think so.
