    300 Yard Groups 22 Cal Winchester 52C

Ok, so here's the deal. My shooting bud and I had an argument about how far a 22 Long Rifle can maintain MOA. I said it could do it out to 300 yards. So the bet was on.

I used my 1956 Winchester Model 52C and Eley Tenex Red Box. It has mounted a Unertl 24x scope.

Yesterday around here the wind was relative calm. Seemed like a good day to try this theory.

I shot 10 rounds at 100 yards. My group was 3/8" center to center. I've done better and I've done worse. It was a good representation of a normal day at the range.

Next I shot 5 shots at 200 yards. I did not want to risk a flier by shooting 10 shots. Group size was 1 5/8". Definitely was under MOA.

Last was the 300 yard. I shot a 2 3/8" group. Needless to say I was on cloud nine. However, my buddy wasn't having any of that 5 shot group stuff. He made me shoot 10 rounds. Well, wouldn't you know it. Somehow, I threw one out into the white. All the shots felt good! I really don't know where that came from. I blame the ammo, lol. Anyway, being a good sport, he decided that, yes indeed, the 22 can maintain MOA out to 300 yards.

I was pretty proud of the 300 yard target. As expected, I ran out of elevation adjustment. I had it maxed out and so put a target way way above to use as an aiming point. It took a little bit to figure out since at 300 the trajectory is like a rainbow.

We had fun! That's the main thing, have fun when you shoot.

My buddy and I have been shooting together for over 30 years. Just like when Jeff Foxworthy makes them people say "I am not smarter than a 5th grader". I made my buddy say, "When it comes to guns and shooting, never ever bet against Gary". hahahahaha

Wow, that's impressive. It's skills like yours that keep me wanting to improve, and led me to rimfire as my platform to improve from.

What kind of a rest were you working with?

Oh yeah, almost forget. We had a discussion as to even though you can hit something at 300 yards, does that little cartridge still have enough power to do the job. So, I put an improvised target up to test penetration. A block of wood. Dang if it didn't shoot clean through that block of wood. The picture is the back side showing the exit hole.

          How thick is that wood?

I used a Caldwell shooting rest on front and pinch bag on rear, with a nice sturdy bench.

Of course, I shot sighters before I shot the groups at each distance just to get on target.

Yeah, that reminds me of one of my favorite videos on youtube.

How far will a .22. The conclusion, "a .22 will kill the crap out of you farther than you can shoot it accurately."

The wood block was 1 1/2" thick. And it is pretty dried out. But still, I thought it was impressive for a 22 target round. Velocity on the Eley is 1080 fps at the muzzle. It couldn't have been to fast at 300.

Impressive shooting there! My Volquartsen 10-22 with Leupold 6.5-20X can shoot 100-200 yard groups pretty close to that---haven't tried 300 yards though (my range only goes to 200)---again, very nice shooting...

There is a club near me, Modesto Rifle Club. Every once in awhile they have a 200 yard rimfire match. I saw one guy turn in a 5 shot 3/4" group. He did not get that kind of group consistantly. But, what the heck, he had bragging rights that day.

JYO, your Volquartsen is a great rifle. I have shot them. To me, what is impressive is that it's s semi-auto. We are led to believe that you need a bolt gun for outstanding accuracy. Volquartsen proves that theory wrong.

I'm impressed with the targets, but I'm REALLY impressed with that 52C. Great rifle.

As good as rimfire ammo is these days, I've always thought there is still room for improvement. Years ago a friend of mine used to compete in rimfire shiloutte shooting. He used a Thompson Center Contender chambered in 22 magnum. Don had RCBS make him a custom set of dies. He would pull the factory bullets, weigh out his powder charge, and seat a new Sierra SMK bullet. Of course, he weighed the bullets also. He got great results.

I've given a lot of thought to doing the same thing except doing it with the 17 HMR cartridge.

Personally, I believe there is not really super accurate 22 magnum and 17 HMR ammo. Neither one is as good as 22 Target ammo. Definitely room for improvement anyway.

Interesting take on the ammo, gunprofit.

I actually settled on .17 HMR on my last rifle purchase because of the ammo quality question. It seemed like the average .17 HMR cartridge was of much better quality than the average .22 LR. I have to admit I haven't seen or tried a lot of the premium target .22 stuff out there.

Same here. Love the 52's, especially in the "C" heavy and bull versions. They truly are an American classic, when "American Made" meant something. They weren't called "the king of .22s" for nothing.
