Ruger 10-22 upgrades

I have a 45+ year old 10-22 that I want to mess with... I would like a bull barrel, Hogue stock and Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 scope. Is that a decent setup? I realize it's not top shelf, but it will just be a plinker and squirrel gun at a friend's dairy.

I like Green Mountain barrels and Boyd's stocks. For a lower cost scope both Bushnell and Nikon will do the jobs you listed. A trigger upgrade is also a worthy mod and easy to do yourself.

Not a fan of the Hogue stock either but as long as you like it. I would add an extended mag release (not sure on the older ones) and an extended charging handle, makes things a easier, have fun!

If it's just a plinker, I wouldn't change the stock and barrel at all. I would get a trigger upgrade, an extended mag release, a bolt buffer, and maybe an auto bolt release, but that's all.

I also recommend a trigger upgrade with extended mag release. My10/22 trigger group is currently at Brimstone getting a tier two trigger upgrade. Shot a friend of mines with this mod and I had to get it done.

Why not keep the 45+ year 10/22 OEM and buy a new $200 10/22 and mess with that?

I have that 10-2. Well, a 1976 Bicentenial. It was beat up when I got it. I refinished the stock, trigger springs, extended mag release, and Tech-Sights.

That's it. Handy little carbine, shoots really accurate, handles nice.

Downside is, you gotta do that at a minimum with a 10-22 to get it to shoot decent. Out of the box they are not that good of rifle, especially for the price.

Shame, because Ruger has years dial them in. But they are still mediocre out of the box.

I'm looking at another semi-auto 22. I'm also looking at alternatives to Ruger...

You DON'T have to upgrade it to make it shootable. It's just that so many people are spoiled by modded-out 10/22s with glass-smooth triggers, space age stocks and accessories, and laser-guided .22lr munitions that can turn corners, tap a squirrel politely on the shoulder before proceeding at high speed through this cranium that people think a basic, unmodified 10/22 must be absolute junk.

The base 10/22 is fine. I'd agree that QC of more recently manufactured models is not up to par with older rifles, but they're still perfectly fine.

i suggest you make no permanent mods to your 10/22 if it is still in original factory configuration.
