Got a new junior shooter started Saturday. Was finally able to get my schedule aligned with my brother. We had been wanting to for two years, but my nephew was occupied with little league. And, my brother and I both were preoccupied with elder care for our 102-3/4 year old grandmother. Elder care can really keep a family busy...
We finally were able to all get together and head out to Sac Valley.
Started him out on the same Mossberg 142A that our Dad got as a kid. Nice little 22, with original aperture sights. Dad got it in the early 50's, and learned to shoot with it. My younger brother and I learned to shoot with it. My son learned to shoot with it. I used it to teach a few of my sons friends, and a number of Boy Scouts.
It was great! Before heading in to the range we gave him a a safety briefing on range rules. He listened closely to all the basic instruction my son and I gave him. We had him shooting some nice groups in pretty short order.
We worked on paper for a while to get the basics down. Moved to a couple "balloon" targets; had 9 little "balloons" on them; he "popped" all of them.
So, we picked up and moved to the rimfire silhouette range. They have knock down steel at 25 and 50 yards. He did great there. Let him have some time with 10/22, slow fire. It is set up for Appleseed. Fun rifle to shoot. He like that too.
Saw him at family dinner tonite; he grinned ear to ear when we talked about it!
It is always fun seeing a new shooter have safe fun. And print nice groups to boot!
