My wife and I are considering buying our first gun. I've shot guns when I was younger with my brother but my wife never has. We were thinking a .22 would be a good start. My brother who is a retired sherrif deputy and has guns his entire adult life recommended a S&W .22A but I see it's been discontinued. Looking for something similar. Any help would be appreciated.

looking for recommendations for .22 pistol

River makes some nice .22 pistols, the 22/45 and mark 2, and I think some are on the roster, there are certainly some in the secondary market. Difficult to put back together, and there are others that are very good, but the rugers are what I've had for years.Originally posted by tony270It's easy to be a keyboard warrior, you would melt like wax in front of me, you wouldn't be able to move your lips.Originally posted by repubconservPrint it out and frame it for all I careOriginally posted by el chivoI don't need to think at all..XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXOriginally posted by pjsigYou are talking to someone who already won this lame conversation, not a brick a wall. Browning Buckmark is still on roster.
Ruger Mark II or III if you can find one for a Private Party Transfer.
Keep your eye on the Marketplace, they go quickly.
There is a similar thread here that has many other suggestions, esp. if you have the money to spend.
Good luck.

Thanks for the link. Lots of guns to look up. I dont know much about guns. I shot some when I was younger with my brother but never really got into them like he did. I`ve got some learning to do.Browning Buckmark is still on roster.

as mentioned above Rugers
(^^ "Rivers" was a Auto spelling correct mistake.) are nice but they are a little harder to disassemble for cleaning.
you really can't go wrong with the Browning BuckMark .22 semi automatic pistol, they've been around a long time and are well designed & made.
.22 is a good calibre starting choice, its low on recoil, low on sound but you still have to wear hearing protection of course.
.22 ammo is showing up more and more nowadays & prices are back down almost normal.
even if you get other guns later on your always need a nice .22 pistol.
this is just a suggestion but if I were you I would ask people here what's a good gun shop for you as a couple to go and look at different firearms.
some gun shops in your area might be extra customer friendly especially towards couples or women than others (the gun store I go to is run by a friendly family so it's perfect for that kind of thing, but its in San Jose)... or have gun ranges with free ladies night. etc..
another resource for you might try looking at is Davidson's firearms online catalog.
they are a firearms wholesaler who will help you find an FFL = federally Firearms License gun dealer in your area.
you can see what you'll be paying up front.
my only tip with that is go to the gun store first ( before you confirm with Davidsons that you'll be purchasing it.) and see if any other gun stores in your area can beat the Davidsons online price.
good luck on whatever you get.Comment

Thanks guys. Any thoughts on a Walther p22 CA? Looks like a decent gun. I still got lots of homework to do. Money is a factor in our purchase and my wife has some physical limitations that might not fit to well with a larger weapon. I think the .22 is perfect for her and myself for what we want it for.AnthonyComment

I've always thought as guns being romantic in the sense of thinking about owning, using, and displaying them. It's important to get something that's visually appealing to you. Most modern guns function well enough to be first on your bucket list. Which by the way should have min 8-10 choices. Do alot of homework first. Otherwise you'll come across something that you wished you knew about before you bought.Comment

Yeah, we're all kind of hosed now that the Ruger Mk III's and 22/45's are no longer on the roster. (If your local politicians vote for such nonsense, thank them during the upcoming elections by voting for someone who instead supports your Constitutional rights.) But we would be more hosed if we at least didn't have the Browning Buck Marks available to us.
I just shot my "Plus" model this morning in a steel challenge match in the POURING rain. During the whole match I had one hickup (a stove pipe failure to eject), and I had felt the gun getting a little "gunky" in the rain during the previous string. A little shot of Ballistol between rounds, and never another issue.
Great working guns, which need nothing extra to buy other then some extra magazines and plenty of ammo. And can be very pleasing to the eye as well.

There are many revolvers you can get through SAE, as long as barrel is over 3" you are GTG on most of them.
Ask about SAE on this forum to learn more.
I personally like the MK II & III rugers, but now off roster, PPT is the route now for those, & many others.Comment

I know exactly what your saying. I've looked at some of the other CA legal .22's and most I just don't care for how they look. I have to like how it looks for me to buy it. I'm definitely a visual person. Not the best way to pick a fire arm I know but it is what it is. Lucky for me I've been doing some reading and video watching on the Walther p22 CA and it seems like its a very good gun. I like the look of it and it will do what I need it to do.I've always thought as guns being romantic in the sense of thinking about owning, using, and displaying them.
