    Ordered the rifle - Now need a scope

    Hello all,

    Well I applied reality and reason to research and desire and have settled in on my first rifle. I'd been shooting pistols exclusively until now, and today I placed the order for a CZ 455 Varmit Precision Trainer. This will be purely a target rifle and initially 80%-90% of its time will be spent on an indoor range of about 30 yards. The remainder will be at an outdoor range and if the drive to get there is tolerable, and the action there compelling, a year from now I may find myself there more often.

    So, now that the rifle question is settled the question turns to scopes. Preliminarily, it looks like the Nikon Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x40 AO is fitting my needs with pretty good pricing at around $184 without shopping it too hard. I will admit that I'm a little confused by the various 3x9 Nikons, but this one seems to offer focus at the distances I'll see. I'd greatly appreciate feedback on alternatives. Some have strongly recommending the SWFA which is a fixed 16x that can focus down to 17 yards, but its quite a bit more. I have an equally pressing problem. I'm clueless in the world of rings. On amazon, they note that the Nikon scope and AccuShot Picatinny/Weaver Medium Profile 2-piece 1-inch Rings are often purchased together. At less than $10 the rings are certainly affordable, but are they good enough?

    What does more money buy you in the ring world? Again, any wisdom you could share would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    congrats on your varmint!! you'll love it...

    also check our rimfire central.. that forum has tons of CZ info!!

      You'll need to get a scope that adjusts parallax down to 25-30y to shoot that close in the indoor range.

        or you can just order this one.

        Vortex Crossfire II Rifle Scope 6-18x 44mm Adjustable Objective Matte

        it goes down to 10 yards.. and i have it on my varmint. pretty clear objective and easily dialed in and hold zero.

          Get 2-7 or just a 4x for 30 yds. 6-18 is ridiculous for that range.

            yes i'd agree.. i only shoot at 50 - 100yards.. but since he needed something close range.. this scope goes from 10 yards and up. hopefully he doesn't need it to be 18X at that close range.

            i have bad eyes.. even at 50yards.. i kinda wish i have 32x!!

              I use a 8-32x44 on my 455 and only shoot 50 yds. If I had it to do over again I would go with the T36 Weaver. You can't get too much magnification if shooting from a bench.

                  Quality tells, try to avoid the made in China ones, hard to do nowadays.

                  Even the Nikons are made there now.

                  The early Nikons were made by Hakko. I have a Hakko OEM the same as the Nikon tactical at MSRP $995.

                  Check ebay for Japanese made scopes...read reviews on line as well at places like Rimfirecentral.

                  A good scope will make a huge difference and the price difference is not that great for a investment...

                  here's just one site with a wide variation in Japanese quality scopes...

                  The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
                  Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
                  Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
                  The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

                    SD JOE speaks words of wisdom. For 30 yards, anything will work. 1-4, 1-6, 2-10, etc. I wouldn't spend a lot on glass to shoot 30 yards. Hell, a red dot works great at 30 yards.

                    Try Primary Arms scope. Check out the used optics for sale on this site.

                      Most indoor ranges don't have a bench with a seat or enough room for front and rear bags. Does yours OP?
                      High magnification will magnify every movement you make. If you are shooting off hand or resting your elbow, low power is your friend. Check out a Leupold VX-1 rimfire. The are available in 2-7(I have several) and possibly 3-9. I believe the parallax is set at 50yds, it will be fine for you purposes.

                        yea i saw that one at reeds last week.. cute little scope... 28mm for $269 but it was so clear to my surprise and even the zoom looking at over 100 yards is much better than my Vortex!! hopefully that's not made in China too.

                          My search would start at 16x and only go up. 2-7 on a precision trainer is a waste even at 30 yards.

                          Go to rimfirecentral and check the Brno/CZ forum there is a thread devoted to scopes in the sticky section.

                              I'm thinking about pickup up a VPT with a Manners stock as well. Where did you end up ordering one from?
