    10/22 mags jamming

Anyone have a problem with their 10/22 mags jamming? The rounds come lose from the carrier and jam up the rotary magazine. I have to shake them them occasionally use a pick to remove the live rounds. Can they be fixed do they need to be cleaned?

I have tried loading 9 instead of 10 rounds even as few as 5 and it still happens.

Are you talking about factory 10 round mags? It's unusual to have trouble with them at all.

I have several that are over 30 years old.Have never disassembled or cleaned them.I know they can be taken apart and cleaned.

Are you having problems with more than one magazine?

Were they purchased brand new? Have you ever disassembled them? If memory serves me correctly the spring needs to put under a little tension durin assembly. If not recoil will jar the follower, shaking rounds loose.

All purchased new and 3 of 4 are prone to jam.

Any time ive ever had an issue with the mag not releasing from my 10/22 carbine i just give her a real good cleaning and it fixes it. I find myself having to re wind the spring in the mags kindof often though.

10/22 mags and guns run great as long as both are clean. Stay away from butler mags. Junk.

It is hard to imagine 3 bad new genuine Ruger 10/22 mags in a row.
So let's move on to other things that may cause this problem.

If it is a really old 10/22, be sure the mag catch spring has not collapsed and is holding the mags firmly front-to-rear.

If this is a 2-3 year old 10/22, some stocks from that time were cut a little narrow in the mag well area.
If your mags do not drop free when the release is pushed, this is a sign that you may have a narrow well.
The mags should have some wiggle room when in the gun.
If the well is too narrow , the mag may be pushed to one side or the other, resulting in feeding problems.
It's easy to fix this problem with a few file strokes on the inside of the mag well....not much needs to be taken off....just enough to a have some wiggle room and then they should also drop free.

If the new mags are the clear 10/22 mags, then new or old, the mag well may need to be opened up as the clear mags are slightly wider than the black ones.

It's odd that the factory 10 rounders are giving you trouble. I would call Ruger CS and explain the issue and see what they can do.

I disassemble and clean every mag I buy, whatever the gun. There is a good read at Rim Fire Central on the mag, it's care and feeding.

Your memory serves you correctly. I had three new mags with the same problem. I disassembled, cleaned, lubed the spring and rotator, sprayed the interior with dry lube then reassembled with about twice the original spring tension. 5,000 rounds later, no issues. I disassemble and clean every 4 or 5 trips.

Frankly just carefully removing the endplate and rotating it to increase spring pressure likely would have sufficed, but I like to use dry lube on the inside of all my magazines.

To clarify the issue is NOT with the mags fitting or releasing from the rifle.

The shells in the loaded mags are coming loose and jamming in the mag. I purchased them new in a multi-pak from the factory. I will try cleaning and rewinding the springs to see if it make a difference.
