    17 hmr question

Can you use 17 hmr on stuff as big as coyotes?

With a good shot at reasonable ranges, heck yes. Some will say not.

(If you have hunting grounds around here, I want to go!)

My cz says you can. This was a 39# male i caught about 150 yards out. Went down after the first shot and i put 2 more unnecessary shots on him to make sure he wasnt getting up.

Predator master forums recommends them. Wanted to see what the calgunners had to say though. Little damage to fur so you can still sell it and can put down even hogs I think it said.

Heh! I posted another copy of this question in the centerfire section and they are telling me to use a deer rifle(243) for coyotes.... um nope. Ruins the pelt. Can't have that when you are wanting to make a blanket. ^_^

Use a CZ and go with head shots and you won't ruin any of the pelt. If a .17 makes a pink mist out of PD's, it will surely take care of a yote.

I have a CZ Varmint .17 HMR, and it does not make pink mist out of prairie dogs. It kills them dead effectively enough, but they pretty much just fall over with a hole in them..nothing like what a good hit with a .223 or .22-250 does. If I see a coyote and it's not too far out, I'll shoot it with my .17, but is not what I use when I am specifically hunting for yotes. I love my CZ .17, and it shoots 5 shots under a half inch consistently at 100 yards, but I don't consider it a perfect gun for coyotes, particularly past 100 yards. It will kill them under good conditions past that but I prefer something with a bullet bigger than a large grain of rice....

Adding - most of the coyotes I've shot at have been moving so head shots are not the best option for me, and I prefer to anchor them quickly.

i dont know where your hunting around santa rosa but i have never seen a yote in CA worth skinning out. Maybe waaaayyyy up in the sierras in the dead of winter? I definitely would not recommend a 17 for pigs. I highly doubt a 17 would put down a 200 pound pig cleanly. As hunters its our duty to take animals quickly and efficiently. I trust my CZ more than any other gun i have but i could not in good conscious take a shot on a 200+ pig.

Pigs are centerfire only, but legal on coyotes. They do the job.

CCI 17 fmj's have no problem killing pigs, if you hit 'em in the sweet spot right behind the ear.

It is NOT legal in California, however, under any circumstances.

243 is a great round for yotes when loaded correctly. I shoot 223 and an old buddy shoots 243 and 17 wsm. Swing that hmr right and you'll be perfectly fine!

How many pass up a shot a coyote that is running if they have a .17 HMR in their hands? As noted, shot placement is everything, especially with a .17 HMR...I just wonder how many actually pass if they are not 100% sure. Personally, I know I can't guarantee hitting a running yote or pig in the head at 100 yards. Or maybe you don't feel a coyote deserves a clean kill? (A generic question not directed at anyone specifically.)

If your spot is less than 150-200yrds I would say go for it. Outside of that and I think a 243 would be a awesome investment since its much more versatile and the caliber is just all around fun to shoot. 105gr A-max out of a decent 243 and your set for most game in CA.

CZ452 Trainer. Hornady 15 grain HP lead free bullet round, 100 yards shot.
Coyote hit behind the shoulder, took a leap, dropped, kicked rear legs twice, dead in 5 seconds.
