Do you need them to dry fire a Buck Mark?

The reviews on available .22LR snap caps are horrid, making me never want to buy any...what do you guys do for dry firing a 22? Or is 22 ammo so friggin cheap that dry firing is not necessary? I guess I'm assuming you just keep blasting mag after mag of 22 until it works...help me out here!

Be careful if you get the aluminum snap caps, it is for testing firearm function only (ejection, extraction etc), not for dry firing.

The only ones I would use for dry fire are those plasticky orange ones that compress down when they get dry fired. I'll use them only a handful of times before I toss them otherwise the plastic won't extract properly.

I am a big fan of the BDM dummy rounds. They cycle well and come 25 in a pack - so you can snap away and toss them as they get beat up. They are cheap too.

FYI - BDM doesn't recommend using them as snap caps but they work well in protecting your barrel from an accidental dry fire.

Until what works?

Like creampuff mentioned, most .22lr "snapcaps" aren't snapcaps. They're for verifying that a firearm is functioning, not dry firing. Most people fail to understand that, treat them as snapcaps, and write bad reviews.

Just as Degrelle pointed out, go down to your local hardware store and get a box of the yellow #4 wall anchors. They work great as a snap cap and on many of my .22's they will even feed from the magazine.

I use these in my Buckmark and my Marlin 795. They load easily from the mag and are hard enough to soften the blow from the firing pin. The guys at Reed's in San Jose recommended them.

I use the orange plastic snap caps for teaching how a firearm functions. I use a spent .22 case for dry firing, they are free and plentiful.

These work great in place of snap caps and if you need to, you can also use them as wall anchors.
