Not a debate about which brand is better more so than which type. For guys who plink with 22lr short barrel do you prefer a simple 4x scope or a 2-7x or 3-9x scope. If course brand recommendations are welcome. I had my eye on the Simmons 22 Mag scope that's 3-9x32. But think this may be much for my American Rifle than maybe a simple 4x would be. I doubt I'd shoot past 50yrs.

Scope Choice for Bolt Action Rimfire

I had a 3x9 Simmons on my old Marlin a few years ago, but quickly figured out I wanted more scope, even at 50 yds. I would look for at least a 4-12x, and a better scope as in Clearage, Nikko, Nikon, Mueller, , Vortex Crossfire, etc. The Simmons is a cheap scope, and it shows it in use. They lose zero, and break all the time. I have several Muellers, a good value, two Nikko's, and two Vortex on the more casual rimfires, with the Weaver and Leupold reserved for the bench guns.sigpic

When I originally scoped one of my Marlin 60's I put on a Center Point 4-16 with AO. I was using it for paper targets from a bench, I'm using another rifle from the bench now so I retired the big scope and switched to a pawn shop find Leupold 4x M8. Much better glass, and it's plenty for short range plinking. The second Marlin 60 with a shorter barrel has peeps, it's fun to have both. I'd rather have a fixed power compact rimfire scope with good glass than a variable scope with cheaper glass.Last edited by Furncliff; 06-02-2015, 9:51 PM.Comment

Depends on what you'll be using it for. If it's just general plinking then a 4x would do. If you want to do any target shooting a 2-7x or 3-9x would be better. One thing said above is very true, it really is worth spending a bit more to get a better scope. I have one of the Simmons 3-9x 22 Mag scopes on one of my rifles and it's just fine, but if I'd had the money it would be wearing a Leupold.Tarasdad

I am very happy with the Simmons 4x32 I have on my Remington.

When I bought my Ruger American rimfire, I happened to have a Simmons 4-12x40 lying around which I had taken off a Savage 10 I used to have. The scope was a bit dim for my taste on the Savage ad so I swapped it with a Nikon BDC.
I put the now-orphaned Simmons on the Ruger and have been very happy with it. My model has a parallax adjustment on the front bell. I do tend to shoot it most at lower power (4-6x), but it's nice to know I have the option of zooming in to 12x if desired. When sighting in, that 12x magnification was very useful."Two dead?!? HOW?!?"

Don't let anyone talk you into selling that 10/22, it's a keeper, especially when it will do head shots on squirrels at 150 yds.

I have a Mueller APT 4.5-14x40 on my Savage that I've been pretty happy with for several years. I shoot bench rest at 100 yards with it so I tend to keep it on the higher end of magnification. It holds zero well (Even been dropped once or twice on carpet) and the glass is surprisingly clear for a cheap AO scope. About on par with a Vortex Viper series glass. Turrets are crisp and true enough for match grade rimfire ammo. Overall, I've been happy enough with it to leave it on my rifle for the last several years.Last edited by Meety Peety; 06-04-2015, 7:11 PM."Everybody is a genius.
