    80% 10/22 Receiver Charger build?

Hi guys...I think I know the answer to this but I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something.

If I took in a 80% 10/22 receiver like this one:

And finished it off with a 8" or 10" none threaded barrel, I could then piece together a Charger correct?

This would be much like the guys that are building 80% 1911's correct? (Taking a 80% receiver, finishing it off yourself, then finishing off the pistol build)

    Thanks in advance!

Ill throw my 2c on the table...

I owned one in the free state of georgia. It was cool and different yeah but after shooting it two or three times the coolness wore off. Imagining it here WITH a bullet button it would be terrible. If you already have a 10/22 and just want a project and something different that probably wont impress anyone dont let anyone stop you. Otherwise you're way better off with a rifle build. Again im not being negative nancy just throwing it out there as food for thought.

OP, let us know if you continue this project please, I'll let you know if the charger is worth it sunday.

        Depends on what you like.
You don't have to leave it as a bipod mounted target pistol.
RimFireCentral has pics of everything from pirate to survival to EBR style.
There's almost more options than for the 10/22 rifle.

Why a non threaded barrel? Since you will be building it as a single shot, it can have a threaded barrel. Once you convert it to a semi auto, it will have to have a fixed magazine so, it can still have a threaded barrel.

These are my assumptions based on my knowledge (there is a very good chance that I could be wrong!)

            1) A Ruger Charger is technically a pistol...not a rifle. One CANNOT simply take a 10/22 rifle receiver and build a Charger with it (even though the receivers are identical).

            2) This is a rimfire build. So no bullet button/single shot will be necessary.

            3) Since I need a pistol receiver for this build, the only way for me to get one is buy a used Charger or build my own with a 80%. Note: new Chargers from Ruger are not on the CA DOJ list, and have threaded barrels. Even if a thread protector or comp was pinned, I couldn't get a new one because I'm not a LEO (that dang list!).

            4) To my knowledge, pistols in CA cannot have a threaded barrel correct? I suppose I wouldn't need a "none threaded" barrel if the barrel I put on has a permanently attached comp, etc.

            Thoughts?

              Wrong.

Read the CA handgun ban ID flowchart(top of the forum), rimfire pistols are not exempted. Since the magazine is outside of the grip, you'll need a mag lock. Since you'll have a magazine lock, you can have a threaded barrel.

Additionally, since you're building an "unsafe handgun"(because it's not on the roster) it needs to be built as a compliant single shot pistol(see SSE discussion in the handgun forum) and can be converted to semiauto afterwards. A ruger charger would be treated the same as an AR or AK pistol(if you read up on how people are building those and the crap that needs to be followed, you'll have the info you need).

Thanks a bunch for the information, doesn't look like I'll be taking this project forward.

                    1) It is perfectly legal to take a 10-22 receiver which has NEVER been configured as a "rifle" and build a handgun on it.

                    2) Wrong and already been covered. You really need to read ALL CA AW laws and understand them prior to making any semi auto firearm. The handgun AW laws do not have a blanket exception for rimfire handguns.

                    3) Again, if you can find a way to legally obtain a virgin receiver (preferably DROSed as a handgun but, I have yet to find any law that requires this), you can build it into a single shot handgun with or without a threaded barrel. If you find a Charger with a threaded barrel in CA, as long as it has a magazine lock, you can legally buy it via PPT. With the mag lock, it would not be an AW with the threaded barrel.

                    4) Wrong, many pistols and other handguns can have threaded barrels in CA. Most AR and AK type pistols sold in Ca have threaded barrels and fixed magazines. So, there is zero legal reason to permanently attach any muzzle devise to a threaded handgun barrel as long as the firearm in question is not a semi auto handgun with a detachable magazine.

Here is one I did from an 80%'r last year. it has a fixed mag, and that is a pain in the "A". It's fun to shoot, but as another poster said, the novelty wears out pretty quick.
