    Rifle advice? .17 hmr

I am embarrassed that I have female noobie questions...

First off. First one what is the best budget .17 hmr I could get for myself? Bolt action prefered.

Second question is more of I have a dilemma that I was hoping someone might have some insight for. I want to get a .17 hmr here in California so I can shoot up some paper targets and tin cans, general plinking. A chiappa little badger or the like, a single shot or bolt action. But I am a student and am trying to keep from having to get a California drivers license until my colorado car registration expires in november. Will I just have to wait till then to get a new noisy toy? Advice?

You can only buy in ca with a ca CDL or ID.

Many ignore the laws about registering a vehicle when you move into state..

You can get a CA CDL and "forget" about the registration as it is a fix it ticket.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

As far as the lower cost bolt actions go my friends love their Savage .17s. Not sure the model, but they were only around $300 out the door a couple years ago. Have one friend with a Marlin who wishes he had went with the Savage.

I spent a little more and went with a CZ 455, but it is a significant step up in looks and build quality (not necessarily performance though).

        mossberg

I have an older 817 mossberg, its not the finest made rifle, but accuracy has been really good. I have done a little work on it, polishing surfaces, installed a trigger stop, bedded the action. It might seems silly to do this amount of work for a cheap rifle, but I like to tinker and as I mentioned, accuracy has been really good.

Once you get your DL sorted, I don't think you can go wrong with any hmr rifle IMO.

Buy the savage with accu trigger. I tried the cz 455 as mentioned and the action was disgusting. It must have been the only one as I hear great things about cz.
get your cdl. They seem to hand them to anyone in cali. Also I wouldn't say female noob questions as many female member here or in cali in general will outshoot a male and know just as much about firearms

While I am happy with mine there was a combo kit on the shelf that wasn't in very good shape. It looked/felt almost used, and taken care of poorly. One had rust on the bolt, wear on the barrel, and a chipped stock. So I wouldn't be surprised if there are lemons out there.

Don't be embarrassed, it's easy. Go to the CA DMV and get a photo ID, used to be $10 probably more now, It's been a long time (20+years) since I've done it. Savage is the best bang for your buck .17 that I have seen. I have never seen a .17 that wasn't accurate. You really can't go wrong.

Bought the Ruger American bolt action and love it. Good advice on getting Ca. photo I.D. then you'll need a Firearms safety certificate. I think that's $25.00-$30.00. Good Luck

+1 for the Savage. Scary accurate with CCI polytips ammo.

Sounds like I am going to get a savage. Will have to see if the local gun shop can order them special since it isn't one of their main lines.

Any gun store worth their salt can get one for you. I suggest spend the little extra for a stainless rifle. Easier to keep everything clean and in good shape. They are fun rifles and great to learn with. And it will grow with your skills for a while.

I've had a Savage 93r with a bull barrell and accutrigger now for probably about5+ years....still shoots quarters off a rest at 100yds with a 35$ 3x9 scope...I love it. I let all the new shooters use it and they instantly love it as well. Just the rifle no scope cost me 333 out the door. And that was before I knew about Gun Genie and some of the other ways to get guns discounted. In the pic I obviously added a few things. Had to get the cheek riser due to the cheapo scope with high rings. It's a tack driver...I highly reccomend

Check gunbroker or others online, I got one cheap a few years back, scoped savage, near perfect condition, CA State ID card.

Target holes are so small you can't see 'em.
