Yep, used to buy them at the local Sears, Roebuck store in the firearms section of the sporting goods department right along side the rifles and shotguns that were also sold. Sears also sold JC Higgins revolvers which were made by either H&R or Hi Standard.

Brings back memories of when I was a kid and Sears was a huge store with everything you might ever want. I loved to get a small bag of popcorn and wander the store while my mom and dad shopped. I would always visit the pet department and the gun section of the sporting goods.
          And so it goes...

You may find vintage .22 buyers at gunshows, may be worth a slight bit more than shooting.

I was intrigued because my first rifle was a bolt action J C Higgins, we bought that ammo from Sear also (1960's). I did a quick search and found some for sale here and there starting at around $25 for the 50 round box.

I have a rifle to go with that J.C. Higgins ammo.

If you are near the L.A. area, I will trade modern 22lr ammo for your old ammo---I collect such things...

Glad you brought this subject up. I have 200 rounds of Montgomery Ward .22LR ammo in 100 round, plastic slide top boxes. They have a "U" head stamp on them..
