I have both in 22wmr, w/bull barrels. I changed out the stocks to thumb hole laminates (Boyds) had apache do the triggers, bolts and they are both great tac drivers. You won't be sorry for buying either. Make sure you float the barrel and spend more then you really want to on optics!

Hi all Cal gunners!!!. Looking to buy a bolt action 22 rifle to go with my Remington 597 HB semiauto. I am torn between these rifles Marlin XT-22VR or Marlin XT-22RZ , Savage 64 FV-SR or Savage MKIIF. all are with my price range. Any Cal gunners own any of these ? I would like some feedback on them before I order one. I will scope and bipod it ..... thanks all!!!

I have a Savage Mark II FV-SR that I bought last year and it gets lots of use around the ranch.
Very light, accurate with a great trigger. It does have a heavy 16 1/2" barrel so it is a small/handy little rifle. Still very easy to shoot and tagging 12"x12" plates @ 200 yards is routine when the wind cooperates.
No iron sights tho.
Can't comment on your other choices.

I have the Mark II-FV.

I like it a lot, shoots well, you'll need a scope, no irons on it.

Personally, I am still suspect of Marlin products after they've been bought by Remington---I guess between the two you mentioned, I would go with the Savage…

thanks for the replies all..... so wondering if a heavy barrel is really needed for accuracy ...Marlin XT-22RZ(threaded...like I can buy a suppressor here in CA!!LOL!!) stats are just like the Marlin XT-22VR without a heavy barrel and my FFL can get 1 at $149 ..others are about 230 to 280ish....http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/xt/XT22.asp

Too bad you weren't in the market a couple weeks ago. Turner's had the Savage bolt gun for $99 at their Reseda store.

All other things being equal, the heavy barrel will give better accuracy.

I have a pre-Remingtion 925M (22WMR) that is very accurate (sporter barrel) and a Savage MKII Heavy barrel that has never met my expectations for accuracy even at 50yds. However I may have just gotten a bad Savage as others have had great success with the Savage .22lr firearms.

Bull barrels should be slightly more accurate than a sporter barrel due to less barrel harmonics with the heavy barrel. One thing about the Savage is the accutrigger is a very nice trigger adjustable down to about 1.5lbs of pull. Nice feature.

I have four XTs (22YR, 22R, 22VR and 22M). They are all fine quality-control wise and are all quite accurate. The VR shoots exceptional groups with CCI standard velocity rounds. I imagine the other 22LRs would as well; I just haven't tried the std. CCI in them yet. The Marlins also have an adjustable trigger system like the Savages.

The heavy barrel should help some with accuracy if you have a good solid stock and maybe have it bedded. If you are looking for real accuracy, it costs more.
