I came across a gentleman trying to sell a bolt gun chambered in .17HM2 for about $200. I've never heard of .17HM2 before nor seen it on shelves. My research seems to point to the .17HM2 becoming obselete. Is this true in the experience of you calguns experts? What is the round good for?

Is .17HM2 a dying round?

I still see Mach 2 right next to .17 HMR at most stores. That said, not sure what it can do that .17HMR can't.Originally posted by GoodEyeSniperMy neighbors think I'm a construction worker named Bruce.
Little do they know that's just my stripper outfit and name.Originally posted by ChopperXI am currently cleaning it and I noticed when I squeeze the snake this white paste like substance comes out. What the heck is this crap?Originally posted by Jeff LDon't D&T a virgin milsurp rifle. You'll burn in collector hell. -
Great for squirrels when it's not windy. Hornady has said they will keep producing ammo, but they only make one run a year. So the price and availability makes the HMR a much better choice at this point. I have an Anschutz in HM2 and love it, but I wouldn't buy another gun in HM2 the HMR is the way to go.Originally Posted by OCEquestrian View Post
Excellent! I am thinking about it as well and I only have 4 points and an unfortunate "match bump" up to expert classification where I am far less "competitive" with my peers there.Comment

On the other hand, I do see both .17 HMR and .17 WSM being viable in the long term. I don't think they'll go the way of .17 HM2 or some of the other obsolete rimfire rounds of the past.Originally posted by GoodEyeSniperMy neighbors think I'm a construction worker named Bruce.

I think it is done when the ammo dries up.I came across a gentleman trying to sell a bolt gun chambered in .17HM2 for about $200. I've never heard of .17HM2 before nor seen it on shelves. Popularity is almost non-existent.
However, you could convert the 17HM2 bolt gun to fire 22LR with a barrel swap.
Might make a nice little project.Comment

Where are you seeing it in stock?!?
I got out of the HM2 and sold off all my ammo, it went from a low of 180 to a high of 210 a brick of 500. Paid around 70 a brick. I had six bricks which paid for a new rifle, optic, and some ammo.
Loved the round, great for squirrels, shoots like a laser to around 80 yards, but saw the writing on the wall...
Was worth it to me when it was twice as much as .22, but not at over 6 times...Comment

17HMR is very accurate, long range but devastates small critters 100yds and less with anything but a head shot. For tree squirrels which are normally taken at 25-60yds it will obliterate the meat with a body shot. Also once you shoot it every squirrel within 150yds will take a hike, very loud round.Comment

Idk about right now, because people have been saying it's going away for the last 5 years.
But he's I do believe it will be gone given, 10/20 years maybe.Comment
