My First Rimfire!

Hello, Rimfire Afficionados,

I finally joined your ranks, I just put a down payment on a Browning Buckmark Camper Stainless UFX from GalleryOfGuns.com. I am having it shipped to Fairfield Pawnshop.

Needless to say, I am excited with this purchase as this is my first rimfire handgun. I've owned close to 20 firearms in my life composed mostly of 1911s, revolvers(SW & Rugers) Beretta's, Glocks, etc. a few rifles BUT never ever owned a rimfire. So, I am a rimfire newbie.

Kindly, advise me on everything/anything you would want to throw my way, and I will heartily listen.

Start buying ammo any chance you get where it is $.10 or cheaper delivered. Rim fire is fun to shoot and you can blow through it fast.

Ammos...... shoot, I've overlooked that part, 2W2X1. Thanks man, which " break-in " ammo would you recommend?

My guess, read the owners manual. Some pistols dont do well with Cci stingers. I would run some High Velocity, quality ammo. Aquila, Cci, winchester x, eley.

As stated earlier, start stocking up on ammo. I try and get it any chance i can. Some members here will sell them for close to what internet pricing, i.e. .08 cents or so a round. I scored some buckets, and lucky my 22's eat them up. Rem golden bullets are about the cheapest high velocity rounds, but dirty.

O, and buy a mag loader. Your thumbs will be happy.

Forget to mention, dont know if your close to a Dick's Sporting goods? Have been getting 22's from them off and on. Sometimes rem gb's, sometimes winchester x, or Cci's. Just a luck of the draw. They have a one box limit so, it keeps the hoarders down.

How much ammo? I get it every chance i can. I dont hoard, it vaporizes in thin air. Darndest thing 22's. Open a box, and Pooof! Gone. Lol.

Remove the 3 hex bolts holding the barrel down.
Clean them and the threads with solvent (not a gun cleaner containing oil, etc.), then use blue Loctite on them.
They loosen fairly quickly otherwise.

If you decide to go with a red dot sight I recommend the Bushnell TRS-25. Small, not so expensive, 3moa dot. I own two and both have held zero. Their size looks nice on a pistola, also have one on a Henry Frontier. Break in ammo choice would be CCI mini mags, stay away from hyper velocity ammo (hard on the pistol) and for greater accuracy SK Std+, Wolf Match Target and Eley Target. Great for target shooting, buy bulk ammo for plinking.

I bought a Ruger Mark 3 a few years back. It coincidentally has a Bushnell TRS-25 on it. I also own many guns and I have to say- this is one of my favorite. It's really fun to shoot for some reason!

The most important thing to do, and the first, is read the owner's manual and use it to field-strip the pistol and give it a thorough cleaning. It's the only way to know for sure that there isn't any material in the barrel or action (such as oil, rust preventative, or machining swarf) that could cause a serious problem on the first shot. And it's good for the break-in process.

"Break-in" really only applies to the moving parts of the action and their engagement surfaces, and the springs. It smoothes things out. I don't believe in any such thing as "breaking in" a barrel. After all, if you clean it properly, it's in new condition on every outing.

But you already knew that. The only thing different between rimfires and centerfires is that the blow-back action of a rimfire puts a large amount of fouling into the action so cleaning the breech, bolt, and inside the receiver is very important. Rimfires also develop a hard ring of carbon and primer material in the chamber, just ahead of the case mouth. You will want to clean this every 200-400 rounds with a brush and solvent. If the ring is allowed to build up, rounds can fail to chamber properly and you start getting all kinds of malfunctions.

I have several Buck Marks, bought my fist in 1986. It looks a bit less plain than it did when new.

Get as much different ammo as you can to see which will be best for your pistol. The good thing about gougers is that you can get a variety of ammo to try right now. As posted try SK STd+, CCI standard Velocity, different target brands. After you see which shoots best in your gun then you can concentrate on getting that. If you have other ammo try trading some for .22. Good luck.

Be careful, rimfire firearms tend to multiply, at least for me...
You might need to check out 22 revolvers, 1911s, and rifles now.

Enjoy! They certainly are fun to shoot. You will probably run through 3-4x the ammo in that .22 then your other calibers, at least I do. Stock up!
