10/22 scope mount to low?

I had a spare scope, that i had on my ar15. Decided to go with a eotech vs scope, so the 10/22 got the centerpoint, 4 x 16 x 40 red/green illuminated. I bought low mounts, and high mounts. i liked the low, but i had to install some "cardboard" shims under the scope ring to allow the front adjustment to clear the barrel.
What do you guys do? Im sure im not the only one who had to shim the mount to clear the barrel? Yes i should buy a better mount. But... i just picked up the rifle and wanted to install the scope. Also plan on a 920 barrel later so i will get a better mount then.
Yea so what do you all shim your scope with? i only needed about 1/16 inch or so. Just enough to rotate the front focus.
One more question. Is the scope to big?

Because the cardboard is compressible, it may not be consistent. I'd invest in some higher scope rings, or a slightly taller rail. I like good quality, aluminum Picatinny rails because I think they hold more securely than the rail that Ruger supplies with the rifle.

Grab a kidd rail, I think they are under $30. It's 1/4 inch, should clear that barrel woth those rings. When you get the fat barrel, you might have to adjust to higher rings.

You could probably also shim it with some plastic from clamshell packaging.

Looks like you are using the factory supplied rail. Sounds like you only need a few mm of extra height. There are several suppliers that have higher rails at very reasonably prices. Google " 10/22 scope rails". I don't think the cardboard trick will work over time. But, you do get extra brownie points for inventiveness.

The DNZ medium mount is perfect for a scope with a 40mm objective lens. It replaces the factory rail. I have one for my Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40.

If you have to shim, use brass shim stock, not cardboard.

If you must use shims I suggest you shim the mount (if the screws for the mount are long enough, not the rings. It can be pretty easy to warp the scope tube when using shims.

This is exactly what I use. Nikon 40mm & a med. DNZ. You can shim it but I'd suggest using solid spacers. Let us know how it works out!!!

Do it the right way, and use a thicker rail or taller rings. Build up the comb of the stock if necessary(there are plenty of stick on pads, stock packs, etc. to do that with).

Also, and don't think I'm talking down to you, the receiver is aluminum, firm but not gorilla torque, and blue locktite the screws.

Shimming a scope is a great way to ruin it. Buy some quality rings. Talley one piece ring/base is my favorite for a 10/22. The DNZ mentioned is also a solid choice.

thanks, if i order the dnz, im not sure if i get the tall, or medium? Plan is to stick a 920 barrel, and dont really want to buy two mounts.
What height are you running for a 40mm, and 920 barrel? Obviously these mounts are not gonna work, but these were laying around the garage, and the high rise mount the scope came with didnt fit the ruger rail. (ruger rail was too small for the bolt that secures to the rail).
Yeah i know its ghetto... But it worked! Lol shot a few out at the range today. Too windy to really dial the rig. Omg the trigger is really bad. Got some pretty decent groups out at 50 yards with gb bullets.
Looks like im gonna have no 10/22 for a while. Need to send the trigger off. Will wait to order the scope mounts...

I'm running the dnz medium mount with a green mountain .920 barrel and have about a 1/8" or clearance with the 40mm vortex .
