    22LR Lead Free Ammo

Just purchased my first 22LR, a Ruger 10/22 (in Wolf camo). Figured it would be a fun plinking gun (instead of trying to find decently priced 223 ammo for my AR). Now I'm thinking about taking it with me on my next hog hunting trip as one of the fields I pass has an abundance of ground hogs, squirrels etc. But of course, all the ammo has to be "lead free", so that has me wondering if and where I can get some for the 22? Turner's didn't have any when I purchased the gun, but I'll be checking and asking again when I pick it up next week. If anyone has some recommendations on a brand and where I can get it, that would really help.

    Thanks!!!

I have purchased lead-free winchester .22 ammo at Cabelas and Midway .. I'm sure the other major on-line players can get it... Not the most accurate .22 ammo,,, but screams at 1600 fps or so.. (32 gr. bullet ??)... Works pretty well on the ground rats ... Cheers...

My only suggestion is that nobody buys any lead free rounds at all. If people start buying it and especially if some start to say they actually like it. You may get alot more interest from your legislators to ban lead entirely and stick us all with that lead free crap.

Yes I may be paranoid, but I am also likely correct.

So, no non-game or big game hunting in the lead free areas for you then eh? Likewise, no hunting for you in CA at all as of 2019 (at the latest, likely earlier) right?

Good call, stop buying lead free ammo. Then stop hunting in CA. Then let CA say "See, people don't want to hunt anyway, let's just turn CA into a petting zoo and outlaw all public land hunting.".

Just saw your in Nebraska, what do you care if we can't hunt in CA anyway...

Are you saying they already are banning lead for Hunting in 2019?

Sad if that is the case. I left CA over 20 years ago. So it is no longer my problem..Sorry

Nothing to do with mine or your location however. It can become a nationwide problem once the slippery slope starts anywhere.

Just some advice I was giving as nothing but friendly, no matter our location. We still need to stay together on these issues. Not fight over a simple piece of advice I gave.

My Brother still lives there. So I do still have some interest in the State. And as said earlier. I am a former resident. Not that any of that has to do with a dang thing..Geez

I am glad I do reside in a FREE State now however.

Total lead ban for hunting phased in by at least 2019, if not before. Lead ammo isn't really a choice anymore.

As of July 2015, non-lead only for all game on Wildlife Areas or Ecological Reserves as well as for anyone hunting for Nelson's sheep.

As of July 2016 non-lead required for upland game birds other than dove, quail, snipe, or bird club birds. Non-lead required for anything hunted with shotgun (other than the aforementioned birds).

As of July 2019 (if not before), non-lead required for any game, furbearer, or non-game hunted.

We cannot use lead shot for waterfowl here anymore. As of now that is the only restriction. Hope it never goes further than that..

I have not kept up on all the Laws out there as I left over 20 years ago. My brother keeps me up on some things though.

It won't matter in 2 to 4 year, Calif will be the next desert.

All of the .22 lr lead free ammo available is inaccurate junk. If you want to hunt varmints with a rimfire in CA, a 17 HMR is the way to go. Both CCI and Hornady make very accurate lead free 17 HMR loads. I know that is not helpful for your situation but may be something to consider.
