10/22 Scope Install help

Need help/suggestions for a scope install on my 70's 10/22.

It is completely stock, and my kids want a scope mounted on it for a shooting trip to NV with my uncle. They want to impress him with their "skillz".

Is it easy to drill/tap the gun?

Should I just drop at a gunsmiths to do?

If a gunsmith is the way to go, please drop me some suggestions.

I'm in South OC for reference and want to stay south of the 91 for a gunsmith.

Every 10/22 I've ever seen already has the recieved tapped from the factory. But I don't see many from the 70s.

Are you sure it doesn't already have 4 holes tapped into the reciever?

Doesn't the receiver have a dovetail on top for installation of dovetail type scope rings? If so no need to drill and tap. Their are also dovetail to weaver mounts available for mounting weaver style rings.

Unless your are a machinist I would not attempt to drill and tap the receiver as proper alignment is critical. Example: .001" off in horizontal alignment equates to a 1/2" error at 50yds.

Plus it's not just buttery smooth, it's buttery soft aluminum.

I have a 10/22 from 1974 and I've had a scope on it for many years. My rifle came with the Ruger scope mount and hardware in the box. I've never seen a 10/22 receiver that wasn't drilled a tapped for the scope mount.

You can consider getting a chassis/new stock that already has mounts for scope rings, such as the Archangel M-4 Conversion kit. It breaks down to 3 pieces using 4 allen and 2 flathead screws, which can be equated to upper and lower receiver and a handguard. I'd sell you mine but then I'd be forced to part out this rifle which I don't want to do. But I will sell you 1,200 rounds for $120 if you're interested. That breaks down to $5/50 rounds.

Can't say I have seen a 10/22 from the 70's, but most are drilled and tapped.
If the top is that smooth, maybe someone refinished it and plugged the holes. Pull the bolt back and look from the bottom.

If it's not drill and tapped, I agree leave it alone.........you probably need another .22 anyway. If you are going to scope it I would recommend the CZ455

Guess I'm the D.A. of the day. Took apart 10/22 when I got Home and looking at inside of recr i realized the four screws on top of the recr are THE holes for scope base. I thought they were holding parts together.

No, not the D.A. of the day. Yes, there's far worse posted on calguns.

You only get that award if you actually tapped 4 new holes into your receiver next to the preexisting set screws.

By the way, what kind of butter are you eating that has lumps and holes and sets screws? Buy better butter!!
